percentage of total

hi all,

i want to do an energy star calculation for opening on the elevation walls, since we can not get the area of the detail item filled region in the schedule, i create a project parameter and used dynamo to copy and paste the same number into that new parameter, i created the schedule but the problem is when i want to do a percentage calculation, it does it based on all, i mean it includes the window region and the wall region together

is there a way to get a percentage of the region for the window based on the wall total area?

please and thank you

So what do you want the % to be based on?

Maybe you could get there with Wall Schedule and Calculated Parameter (e.g. Length * Unconnected Height - Area).

if i go this way, i have to create a parameter for the walls and windows in order to specify their orientation, north, south, west and east. then i have to create separate schedules for each of them. i dont know...

and also, this wouldnt contain the extended faces of the wall or even the portion of the basement wall that is above the grade. but thank you

Why don't you use a calculated parameter that subtracts the window area from the total wall area and use that?

I think you missed the point. The reason I posted a screenshot of a Window Schedule was to show that the "=Length * Unconnected Height - Area" Calculated Parameter in the Wall Schedule accurately reports the Area of the Openings in the Wall -- in this example, a 10 SF Window.  There is no dependency between the 2 Schedules.

That's not altogether true.  The Area of the Wall will be accurately reported.  Regarding the "extended faces", I don't know what this means.  But this a intelligent way to calculate Opening AREAS.  It is offered as an alternative to using 2D Filled Regions and building in the intelligence you need.

Capture.PNGthe area of the wall is accurate but when you go true calculating the length * height , you get a different result for wall with base or top extension. plus, let's say there's a foundation wall that only 6" of it is exposed above grade, how can you calculate that portion of it only.

i need these calculations for energy star efficiency, so i have to do this for all 4 sides of the building, some walls are half out and half in the ground, some walls have top or base extensions, not all the elevations have openings, and openings are not just windows, doors are included too.

anyways, thanks for your time

You know, you might look into Roombook. I can see it helping here. In fact, that's probably the best solution.  Should have suggested it yesterday.

As I said, the Wall Schedule will report every square inch of wall.   If it could not; Revit would be a pretty lame BIM program.  Wouldn't you agree?

...How's those filled regions working out for you?

Nice CAD solution.  To heck with BIM.

we'd love to see your BIM solution,

single family house

2 and half storey

north/south/west/east elevation

3 elevation styles

5 interior design options ( 3 of them affect the side elevations and windows)

let me know if you have any questions lol

I've already shown you the BIM solution.  Frankly, its pretty much the same as your CAD Solution -- accept without all the extra work.

It can be done with Walls/Doors/Windows schedules as long as you model them correctly.

There is a trick to nest a single shared opening family in different doors, windows, etc... families instead of draw the Opening Cut directly in those.  Then you can create an Opening schedule in project by filter in only that opening family instead of messing with different families, types, and categories.

Furthermore, I think you can even use Dynamo to copy the opening area in each wall to a parameter of the wall so you may not need to create the Opening schedule at all.

Design Options require you to create more schedules but the process is the same.

Personally, I don't care if it is BIM, CAD, or Lego solution as long as it does the job.  I may even export the raw schedules to TXT files, link them to an Excel file and do the calculations there.
