Painting walls of copied linked files with different materials

Is it possible to paint or change the material of a specific wall in multiple copies of the same linked file loaded in a project, so that same wall will have different materials applied to the multiple copies if the linked file?

This will be very helpful for copies of linked conceptual models that are exactly the same except for changes in wall colour, so only one linked file is required & any changes easier to manage.

Or does a Revit view have to be exported out to another program to do this? Which one is best?

Unfortunately there would be no way in Revit to override the materials for linked elements per link.  You would need to copy/monitor and then change the wall type or paint material to the new "live" wall.  Otherwise, export and color in Photoshop or your favorite graphics program is definitely a way I have seen this accomplished.

@markkukola

If you need more than one instance of the link model in a View then copy-monitor as suggested by @JasonKunkel the walls is the only feasible solution.

If you only need one instance of the link model in a View, e.g. different views showing different options, then there is another approach.  Let me know.
