In the DO dialogue

I select my option and click make primary.

I get the following error:

"No element in a secondary Option can be referenced by an element outside that Option."

I'm also getting this issue if I attempt to copy paste an element from a different file into  given option.

Excerpt from above link.. Go through the link..

"Elements in the main model cannot reference elements in a secondary option. Therefore, elements in the main model do not change their shape or properties when you are editing a secondary option. For example, if you sketch 4 walls in the main model and then sketch a roof in a secondary option, the walls do not regenerate and attach to the roof.

I'm not getting much from the link.  There is currently nothing in my primary option, as such I don't know why I am getting this error. Nothing is being referenced as far as I can tell.

I don't understand why this reference issue would only occur when I try to make my option the primary option.

BTW this happens if I try to make any of my options the primary option.

I also deleted all options except for one and the primary and I still get the fatal error.

Hi,Jean

Has this problem been solved yet? I'm having the same problem. Do not understand why this would happen. Is this a Revit bud?

Make each of the Design option entirely independent (no joining, constraining) from anything else including the Main Model. Guarantee no more of that warning.

Thank you for reply, but I don't think this work for me, in a structural model every beam ends have to be connected perfectly.

If the scenario is having one beam in each Design Option and the column in the Main Model then you will need to have two columns as well. Everything connected together should be within their own Design Option.

Yes, all the shared columns are in both options. but I found problems. It happen when a beam is join right at the option 1 beam split location. once share the element in both options problem is solved. Thank you for your help Toanoption error.jpg

This error will occur if you try to change the primary option, and you have created a new family type or duplicated an old one during an option editing mode. To fix it, you should delete all family types created during an option editing mode from your model.

Hello all,

First ever post.  So then,  the dreaded problem trying to accept an option as primary and getting the above message.

This has happened me on a number of occasions when I've noticed an error in the existing phase and tried to correct in an option.

THE FIX

I have found a crude way of dealing with this which can involve a bit of time, but gets around the problem if you're really stuck.

Go into the damaged option which you'd like to make your primary and copy clip everything in it.  You'll need to do this in a 3d view, in wire frame display, to make sure you select everything.  You'll also need to select everything level by level/ view by view if you've added any annotations in views which won't shown up in 3d views. Maybe easier to start with the model elements and follow on after with any annotations.

Create a new option from scratch and paste the model in plan view (select align to current view to make sure it pastes to the exact same location as before.  You will need to copy and paste each phase (including demolitions) separately from the damaged option to the new option to preserve any phasing in the model.

Obviously this is not a very quick fix if the model is very complex, but once complete you can accept this new option as your primary (or duplicate it you wish to create a further option of that option).

I'd be interested to know if this problem has a simpler fix.

Hi,

In the same problem. I have an extensive gird system shared between two design options containing panels, doors, mullions, etc.

Isn't better to leave the warning as it is rather than duplicating the grid system to not make my Revit file heavier?

I have the same problem.   The cut and paste didnt work.  This bug needs to be fixed.  This should not be an issue.
