Nested family material association not working?

I've created a family from three window families but am having difficulties Getting one of them to received materials defined by the main family. Lots of head scratching. 

Is it possibly an issue with the window in question being the nest for the other two windows?

Because you Painted it. Remove Paint or Paint with a Parameter (e.g. "Material Name (param)").

Interesting. Not used the paint material function before so I guess the family came with the faces painted already. Strangely I couldn't remove paint from them but I could add my frame material parameter by painting and all is good now. Thanks
