Nest Void inside family

I am trying to create a cabinet family with bore holes in the panels (extrusions).

I created a new generic model family that only has a single void extrusion with no other geometry.  'Cut with Voids When Loaded" is checked in that family.

When I load that family into my cabinet family and place it in a location that intersects a solid extrusion, not matter what I do, I can't get the void family to cut the extrusion.  When I try using the geometry Cut tool, it lets me select the extrusion, but not the void family.  So the void family stays orange, and the extrusion never gets cut.

What am I missing here?

Thanks.

The way you have done will not work. Two options

You can create the void in the cabinet family itself

Or

You create a face based void family (start with generic template, face based) and nest that family in your cabinet family.

In the face based family you cut the extrusion (that is present in the template) with a void. Then when you place that family on a face in your cabinet family it will cut that face you put it on.

In general I try to avoid voids if possible. They tend to be a bigger performance hit than solids. So normally I will see if I can create the objects without using voids
