Naming/Numbering Version Projects

Hello,

I am trying to find a useful way to naming or numbering the multiple versions of a .rvt file. Do you have any idea to share with me?

Are these design variations or revisions you are looking at naming?

We follow BS1192 naming so if we have different design versions they just get sequential numbers.  This allows us to easily tally data within Excel as well using dynamo based on a file name.

I am looking at naming revisions design. But can you explain to me which is the difference between variations and revisions.

BS1192 would look something like this;

WPS-JMA-01-ZZ-M3-A-0001

If we had a second design option this would be;

WPS-JMA-01-ZZ-M3-A-0002

If you wanted to track revisions of a project then you can add that on the end, however because filenames typically need to be the same for each upload to the CDE we don't use this in the filename but it would be something like this;

WPS-JMA-01-ZZ-M3-A-0001-P01

I'm not sure if this is of any help to you at all though, it would be good if you could expand a little on what you are trying to achieve and what you are doing just now.

I am trying to set up a revit template and in this time I have started to organize the project browser and thinking about how to name the saving files and also how I can name the versions in order to be easy for someone to distinguish which design option is the latest!

In parallel I am thinking about if it is a good solution to have a server in which we will update our drawings in order to be' safe'.

A central server with a daily backup is pretty much essential in this day and age I'd say... 

With regards to file revisions you just need to adopt a system and stick to it, the 'Project Browser' won't make any difference to this as its all in the file name.  BS1192 is a good starting point although not perfect but it is at least a 'standard'.

I mean having a central file server that all your local machines connect to is pretty much a must along with a robust backup strategy.
