My files won't open directly into Revit

I recently downloaded Revit onto my new computer. Ever since then, when I try to double-click files to open them in Revit, a pop-up appears saying there is no app available to open my selected file (which isn't true). So every time I want to open a file in Revit, I have to go into Revit click "open Revit file", find the file on my computer, and open it through the app. If anyone has had this happen to them before and got it back to where you can just double-click please help me if you can. Thanks!

This is the recommended way to open Revit files.

In the "open" dialog you can click on "Tools" and add that folder to Favorites for easier use later.

You should put all your project in the same folder with subfolders.

Start Revit first the use Open button or File menu to open files.

that is the right way to do it.

You will see that if you do not proceed this way , you will have problems if:

  • you have more Revit versions installed on your computer...the method by opening direct from file will open the last version ....once saved , the file could not be turned again to a previous version
  • you work in worksharing ...it will open the last saved Local , and it's possible to loose new added information in Central File by other team members

@bp253618 As mentioned by others, there are multiple reasons to avoid double clicking on RVTs to open models in Revit.

However, if you would still prefer to use this workflow, the Windows File Associations control what program is used when double clicking on a file.

You should be able to right click on the RVT, select Open With, select Revit from the list or click More Apps and Look for another app on this PC to browse to the Revit.exe file (by default this would be in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit ####).

Default is not recognizing the 2026.  Still shows at 2024.

The default shouldn't matter if you are opening files from the program as recommended.
