Multiple sites one link file - shared coordinates in Revit

Hi there,

I was wondering if it is possible to link one Revit building into multiple sites with different coordinate systems?

Obviously if you link to the one site it pushes the coordinates back to the link so when you link by shared coordinates to the next site it pushes out the location.

This building is an option for 3 different site locations so we would like to be able to show it in 3 areas without having to duplicate the building to 3 separate files - is there a way to share 3 coordinate systems and flip between them depending which site you're working in?

Thanks,

Tiffany

You can define multiple shared sites.... Tell you the truth I have never tried that scenario... I've always had multiple buildings in one site model, but I only had to worry about one coordinate location.

Yes.  You can link one building in as many sites as you want.  Publish the shared coordinates from different site files to different Site names in the building file.

Are you asking if one project can have multiple coordinate systems? In other words, both Project B and Project C push their coordinates to Linked Project A?  Projects can only have one coordinate system.

Hi @tiffany.naude

Which Revit version are you using?

@barthbradley is right, While you can define multiple sites in a project, models can only share one overall shared coordinate system.

Also see, Suggested workflow with shared coordinates in Revit and see AKN article on Defining Named Positions and this blog for some great information on the same

Please follow the below steps and see if this works or results in an error message:

  • Create a new Revit project.
  • Link in the Site file
  • Link in the revit model
  • Make 2 copies of the RVT link and move them around so there are 3 RVT link instances
  • Publish Coordinates to each RVT Link and click Duplicate each time to create a new site for each (so there is A, B, and C). Now each link will have the Shared Site parameter set to the new location:

  • Now, use Acquire Coordinates and select the CAD File. (Afterward, you want to publish the new coordinates to each site in the RVT, since you changed the host model coordinates.)
  • Publish Coordinates > select each RVT > and overwrite the A, B and C location.

Let me know if this works and this is what you are seeking.

You are also welcome to share the files for further investigation! Let me know and I can forward a private folder.

I will reach out to the team for more recent information on shared coridnates.

Adding a recent documentation for Revit 2019

Defining different named positions for the different site options would be a reasonable approach

Please try the steps listed in the above article and let me know if this works for you!

@tiffany.naude  So you can totally have one building placed at different places in the site models, just name them accordingly as @ToanDN stated.

Now...you can link in the site models into the building model via shared coordinates, but,  this is where @barthbradley is correct that you can only have one site defined at a time and it applies to all views.  But you can always change the site in the Location, Weather and Site Window.  Select the site and make current and watch the sites change for your building.

I created 3 site models....one at 10', one at 20' and another at 30'.  Since they were not centrals I had to keep all 3 site models open in separate sessions...I linked in the building at each site and level accordingly and published the location as site10, site 20 and site30...then closed everything and opened the building model and linked in all the sites via shared coordinates. Just had to designate which site I wanted to be active.

In most cases, a Site model should only have one shared coordinates because a Site is location specific; a Building model can have as many Shared coordinates as needs be (think of it as a cookie cutter house, designed not to any specific location, sold to gullible buyers around the globe.

Complications come when you need to document the building with site related information.  It is most likely better to do it in the Site file instead of the Building file.

You can copy your link inside the central file to representate all the buildings, for me i create one building and then i mirror to have the another.

Hello mpwuzhere, I am wondering if there is a way that I can show two different site locations simultaneously on two different views or sheets ? I am trying to control the views through VG and template, but I cannot find an option for the site location. If you know the answer, please let me know. Thank you.  Regards, Bill123.png
