Models do not share the same shared coordinates even though I have acquired/published

In 18 years of using Revit I have only started experiencing this recently, but it occasionally happens!

We are working for a tenant moving into a large commercial project and have received models from the base build team. Their models are not aligned to the same place but use shared coordinates to resolve those issues.

I have taken the Base Build Architects control model (gids and levels) and acquired coordinates and then tried to link their various models in by shared coordinates, however I get the usual error

I have tried linking our model into their control model and publishing coordinates... all looks good until I try and link in and I still get the above message again.

I can link all of their teams models using shared coordinates to each other, and I can setup our models and link them to each other using shared coordinates, but for some reason, the two siloed sets of models refuse to talk to one another, which means all of our consultants as they come on board are going to have to rely on manual positioning of the models and resolving all of the different locations of the base build models.

Can anyone explain why this might be happening, I have had it happen a couple of time per year and only in the last couple of years and I setup almost all of the projects initially for our company which is on average 50 to 60 project per year.

Thanks in advance for any light shed, or better still a fix...?

Ian

Shared coordinates only work when every file references the same authoritative control model and active Site position. Link each discipline model into that control file, publish/save the coordinates back to each model, then acquire coordinates in your tenant model from that same control file. Also verify the same Site is current in Manage > Location.

Hope this helps. If it solves the issue, you’re welcome to mark it as a solution so others can find it more easily.

Thanks for the response @AEC_Revit_Lab ...

So if the Base Build (BB) Architects publish from their site model to their building model, and then only send us their building model and we acquire from that, would you not expect that to behave as expected...  or are you saying that we should need to acquire from their site model, being the genesis of the shared coordinates...?

I thought that this would/should work 🤔💭
I thought that as long as it was from the same derived parent coordinates it was valid...???

Cheers

Yes — that should work. If they published coordinates to the building model and saved it, acquiring from that model should carry the same coordinates. I’d check the active Site, Survey Point values, and that the published changes were actually saved.

Apologies for the delay in getting back, and I see that someone has nominated a solution to this issue, that isn't actually the issue 😗

I've only managed to get back to this project in the last couple of days, and have done some testing of a number of things, and actually stumbled across the issue.

We have a number of models from the Base Building Team

Arch

  • Grids and Levels Control Model
  • Interiors Model
  • Facade Model

Struct

  • Existing Structure & Demo
  • Proposed Structure

Landscape

  • Street Level Model
  • Roof and Terrace Model

Services

  • 1 Combined Services Model

So I have been using the control model as my starting point, and it turns out that is where the problem is. And because this has never been updated I only have a single transmittal of this model to work with, whereas the others we have received most of them at least a couple of times.

I decided to try ignoring the Control Model and reset and acquire coordinates from the Architects Interiors Model instead et-voila, everything seems to work fine... I can even link in the control model by shared coordinates, so I am not sure if it is just a glitch in the control model, or even something that happened in transit, but I am now able to successfully acquire coordinates and link all models as long as I don't start with the control model ironically...

Sorry for the delay in closing this out, I was off sick last week, and playing catchup this week...

Hope this helps anyone else if you have a similar issue in the future.

Cheers
