Modeling Cross Laminated Timber in Revit

Hello All.  I am trying to create a Cross Laminated Timber wall in Revit.  I would like to create a wall that has boards that are layered orthogonally to each other.  Wondering if anyone has had any success with this?  I am also open to ad-ons but have not found one that is free yet.  Thanks in advance!

Can't you just layer the laminate build-up in the wall assembly?  Use two different materials/cut patterns? 

 

...something like this?

Thank you. That is what I thought, or have tried anyways. Perhaps that is what I will end up doing but because my graduate research entails modeling the building's energy performance I was hoping to model the CLT wall as closely as possible. As in, demonstrate that the layers are orthogonally aligned and adhered to each other. I have been unsuccessfully trying to get a CLT plug-in to work. I will keep at it. Appreciate your suggestion!

Demonstrate how?! 

  1. by having 1x multilayered wall (say with 8 layers in the wall structure)?
  2. or by having 8 thin single layer wall elements joined to each other instead of 1x multilayer wall?
  3. or by having 1x multi-layer wall element consisting of 8 layers converted to PARTS?

the end result in the energy performance would still be the same if your inputs in the element(s) properties tally up and are correct

Ultimately, yes. So I could just set the thickness/materials to match the thermal properties of the wall. I am also providing wall segments hence my focus on the layers. After considering all the suggestions, and successfully downloading a glue laminated timber family, I think I have something that will work. Thx!

Thanks for the ideas! You are right about the end result. I made a wall composed of several thin single layers and was able to create the wall segment figure I wanted. Then I was able to make a thicker single layer wall of a glue laminated timber family I found. I think I am good to go. I so appreciate the help! Thx

You would need two materials: one is for horizontal wood layer and the other is for vertical wood layer (their properties should be identical except for surface/cut patterns and appearance texture), then assign them to layers in your wall type structure assembly.

And this only for graphic presentation, there would be no difference in thermal value between cross-grain lamination and parallel-grain lamination, if the thermal properties of horizontal material and vertical material are identical.

Sure.  Sometime same or similar responses posted later got credit over the ones posted earlier.  Example: It happens to the thread I referenced above too.  

 

The difference is some people choose to move on when a few choose to be salty.  In the end of the day, OPs get the answers and that is what matters.
