Model in-place walls and openings

Hello.
Ok so I have a multilayered wall made up of two independent wall instances that run alongside each other. I want to place a door and a curtain wall in one of them and have the wall openings in both layers of the wall. I am aware that this could be achieved by joining both of the walls and then placing the door in either of them.


The thing is one of those walls is a prefab that I would much rather have modeled as a model in-place wall. It appears that by having a modeled in-place wall and a system wall, openings are no longer shared among the different layers even if they are joined. I can place the door on either one of the walls and the proper opening will appear but ONLY on the host wall. And with curtain walls is even worse. I cannot for the life of me find a way to properly join it with the model in-place wall at all.

 

At this point the project might still change a little bit and there are plenty of doors and curtain walls in this situation so I am avoiding as much as possible solutions that rely on me manually making wall openings and void cuttings.


Any ideas of what I can do? Or is this just another “Revit Thing” that I should learn to live with?

Can you simply join geometry between the neighbouring walls to allow the opening to be automatically cut. 

Hosted objects such as a window or door in one wall will cut openings in a second parallel wall when the Join Geometry tool is used between the two wall objects.

 

Otherwise you would need to manually add wall openings to cut the other walls at the door opening.

While I am one of the first to say "It's just because it's Revit" when I'm asked why things don't always work correctly and/or as expected, In this particular case the problem that you are experiencing doesn't fit into that category.

The reason that I say this is because the "model in place" wall isn't an actual wall.
What you actually have are modeled elements that Revit is trying to treat as if it was a wall because that is the category that you assigned to the model in place element. That subtle difference is what is causing your problem. By mixing the element types, then trying to treat them as if they were the same element type, you will encounter one issue after another while trying to coordinate between them.

I don't know what the reason is that you have for wanting the second wall to be modelled in place, but I would consider alternative methods, either phasing or options, or even some other creative approach.

thanks for the explanation. I guess I might be asking too much of the software or even using the tools incorrectly.

For now I will work with system families until I am sure the project will no longer suffer further changes and will evaluate jumping into model in-place walls through Construction Design.
