model in place void- cannot edit

Hello all,

I have some existing walls and I want to demolish a part of them. To do it, I use model in place component as void and cutting the existing wall with the void I have the result that I want.

The problem is that if I want to adjust further the demolish part I cannot. I can select the void , but in some cases I don't see the option to 'edit In place' and in another cases, when I click to the option 'edit in place'  I don't get the sketch mode of the void.

Do you have any idea for why this happens or another way to demolish a part of an existing wall?

Thank you in advance!

It would be more consistent and practical to use a family with Length & Width parameters since you need it more often and to select and modifying those is fairly easy in comparison with a model in place where you could be selecting the joined geometry instead of the void instance ... I would use either of the following:

  1. Floor/Wall based generic model with a void extrusion cutting the host in the family
  2. For walls you can also use a window or door family

For the model in place you can also add parameters so that you do not have to edit the in-place whenever you need to adjust....for the already placed instances >>>

  1. tab select the in-place instance
  2. wait for the mouse over tool tip to show and make sure that it is not the joined geometry you are selecting
  3. use UNCUT geometry
  4. edit the extrusion/sketch
  5. you can add parameters at this instance
  6. finish the extrusion/sketch
  7. then cut wall and finish the in-place

@mairh_tsek yes this happens when using voids sometimes, I think it could be related to phasing. At one point I had one of these 'lost' in temporary phase, bit of a mystery to figure that out^^... anyway, try to find the view / phase in which this void was created and see if you can edit it again then... or otherwise, just deleting/recreating it could be easier...

If I create wall based generic model family, it would not be misleading when I will create after schedules for the walls quantities ?

No why would it be? you can always filter it out using a parameter ...

  1. Give it a Type Mark (CUT) and in the schedule filter using Type Mark ... Not equal to CUT
  2. or if you are using Revit 2022 you can filter a schedule using Family Type

OR you can also do the opposite of step 1 and schedule only the demolished openings if you need that for something

So either ways it works to your advantage

@RDAOU ,

OK, I see that it is quite difficult to select the family in order to change the length/height parameter that I created. In most of the cases it selects the demolished wall..

ok, actually the family was  created in project phase, and I had in my view only the existing/demolish phase...

Sorry I am unable to make it any easier for you...You being able to see the demo means the Family Phase created is new. Therefore when your phase filter is set to Previous + Demo you cant select NEW...otherwise; you shouldn't be having any issues that prevent selecting the family. So make sure the phase filter shows New and use any of the following

  1. Use Tab and keep tabbing till you select the family...
  2. Use a crossing window then open selection filter and uncheck other elements
  3. Temporary hide the infill >>> select the family >>> edit >> reset temporary hide
  4. schedule the openings and use the schedule to highlight in the
  5. Add 2D detail lines to the void family with a visibility option (like a symbol or an arrow pointing to the Opening) ... switch visibility on when you want to select then switch back off once you are done

@mairh_tsek ...I suppose you might have an irregular opening in case you're using an in-place void cut? That could probably be the case to choose to do it as in-place family I guess(?)... otherwise see/follow above tips by @RDAOU, works like a charm 🙂

@Martijn.Pater ,

No, actually in my case now I don't have irregular openings, so I will try the family void method as @RDAOU suggested.

And please make sure phase filter shows NEW elements (see reply above) Filter Previous + Demo will not allow you to select anything created in Phase new
