Model-in-Place component convert to Family component

Is it possible to convert a Model-in-Place component to a regular Family component?

Example: I created a model-in-place of a retail fixture but would like it to be a standard component that I can load into other projects.

Does anyone know if this process actually helps downsize the Revit file the Model-in-Place element was originally created in after it has been saved as a Family component?

I tried this and Revit started saving out all families in the file. Anyone else have this issue?

For future reference the live version of this post is at Save an In-Place Family as an RFA for use in another project » What Revit Wants (wrw.is)

Another option - edit the in-place geometry.

In the editing view, select and CTRL-C to copy, CTRL-V to paste the geometry in a blank family template of the correct category. Dimension and constrain as needed.

I've found this approach to be much simpler than the previous one, FYI.
