Mirrored element color change

I am modelling a wooden shed. The picture shows part of the roof plan.  I have made a rafter using "model-in-place" as a generic model, with material "wood". When I mirror the rafter, the color changes to a darker shade (see bottom of view). Why is this happening?

Thanks - it is ok in Realistic Colors. But why would it be like that in Shaded mode-

Is it something to do with the sun path?

Your Sun Path is on?  If so, drag the Sun to a different location, or open the View's Graphic Display Options and change your "Lighting" settings.
