Microsoft Surface Book Keyboard issues with Revit 2017

Anonymous

I have a Microsoft Surface Book with the performance package. I don't have lag issues or any performance issues with running Revit, but occasionally my keyboard will stop responding. The keyboard will respond periodically, but never go back to normal response times once it starts glitching. I have changed the resolution around like the other posts have suggested to deal with visual glitching, but still run into Keyboard issues. I noticed one other person saying the same thing as a piggyback on another post, but it didn't receive any input.

Hi! I completely understand what you're going through. I didn't want to return the computer a second time so I attempted to change the resolution and scaling again. It somehow worked! Resolution is noticeably slightly worse, but it works well now. It's just a shame that we would have to change those settings. Try this until a permanent solution is acquired!

Change resolution first to 1680 x 1050 then "change the size of text, apps, and other items" to 100% and sign out so that it can refresh. I recommend restarting your computer too. 2018 seems to work slightly better than 2017. Hope that helps 😞

Thank you... I made the changes and will give that a try... I hope it works. I did order a Bluetooth keyboard as a backup plan, as someone mentioned that a blue tooth keyboard was a work around for them.

Hi @Anonymous

I wanted to share an update on this end - I'm in communication with the team and Microsoft support regarding Revit and MS Surface's keyboard.

Meanwhile, can you please send me the required answers that I requested in the previous posts to help troubleshoot this issue?

I have gathered information from few others who posted on this thread with similar issues and still waiting to hear from the others.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Regards,

I know, I've been in contact with you and I truly appreciate the efforts you are putting forth to resolve this! I would suggest looking into the issue that it is the resolution or something connected to it. I'm guessing these computers have such a clear display that revit isn't able to process it or something like that! I have changed my resolution and scaling on my computer to be much lower. It is working relatively well, but every once in a while I run into my old issues. Even in 3ds max yesterday, my ctrl and shift buttons weren't doing their job for a short time.

Thanks again!

Doesn't necessarily have to do with this conversation but that would make sense. When I had 2016 on my surface, it was basically impossible to read anything in Revit because 2016 wasn't designed for a 4K resolution and at that time there were forums talking about it.

I agree with @Anonymous, it is greatly appreciated how hard you are trying to resolve this!

Changing the resolution had no effect on my problem. keyboard stopped working just like before and at the same frequency.

I realized I was not using the 2018.2, so I'm updating today to see if that helps.

I updated to 2018.2 and changed the resolution to the recommended for resolution and scale and it appears to be working fine now.

I will keep you posted

Hi @Anonymous

That is good to know!Smiley Happy

While the investigation in progress, for other users looking to update, please see information below:

I would suggest checking the Desktop App to see if there are any Revit updates available. For information on using the Desktop App see the following article: About the Autodesk Desktop App

Note: If you are not able to download updates through the Desktop App, the following article has information on downloading updates through the Autodesk Accounts page:

Install Updates, Add-ons, and Enhancements

I updated to 2018.2 yesterday, and reset my resolution. Today, when I booted up my surface book for a collaboration meeting I got about 5 minutes into Revit then lost my keyboard again. I'm gong to try modifying the resolution in 2018.2, but am doubtful this will help.

Viveka, do you know if anyone has been beta testing the new surface book to see if this problem exists on the new machine coming out this fall?

Thanks for your help. Please let me know if you need anymore information from me or my machine.

Update -

I updated to Revit 2018.2 and set my resolution to 3000 x 2000 (Recommended) and Change the scale of text to 200% (Recommended) and I haven't had real work to do in Revit but i left it running in the back ground and it seems to be working fine.

I will keep everyone updated if things change.... And an FYI - I was having trouble running Adobe Illustrator and when i changed the settings to "recommended" - it is also running fine now.

Update - i changed my resolution as noted and the keyboard does go in and out but not nearly as bad as before....

So, i will grab my Bluetooth keyboard and see what happens when i use that.

The behaviour I've noticed is that it is a long and delayed response to a keystroke. Occasionally when the response eventually kicks back in, it's like the keystroke is stuck down. It only seems to be Revit causing this behaviour.

Windows 10 also has a lot of underlying keystroke logging, so I wonder if that is causing a conflict

The only fix I've found for this is to disable hardware acceleration in Revit. That appears to do the trick, but we shouldn't have to do that - Autodesk please can you fix this?

Hope that helps

agreed. I have noticed that when the keyboard does become responsive, it unloads a bunch of backlogged keystrokes.

in my last post I thought I had updated to Revit 2018.2, but had only downloaded it. Now that I've updated I've had no problems.

In my latest post I said that my machine was working with v.2018.2. While using it over the holiday weekend my keyboard stopping working again. I don't have actual measurements of time,  but it did seam to happen less, and recovered more quickly than before.

Viveka,

any word on if this happens with the new Surface Book 2? There is a chance I might be able to upgrade, but would need to know this is not a problem on that machine before doing so.

Has anyone else tried using Revit on the new SB2?

@Viveka_CD,

any word on a solution or if this happens with a the Surface book 2? I noticed this week while I was on a plane that when the physical keyboard become unresponsive the digital touch keyboard still works (the one that pops if you hit the keyboard icon in the lower right hand corner). So strange.

I would love to hear there is a solution in place. I cant use a second keyboard in most instances that I am using this computer.
