Material Quantities Discrepancy/ error

Anonymous

Hi, I am scheduling the concrete material take-off of different grades of concrete used in my project.

Eg.- say M25 for slabs and beams, m35 for columns etc.

But on generating a material takeoff, many redundant fields also appear with volume-zero.

I have checked the instances- they have a different material applied to them, and their respective quantities are tabulated correctly.

eg- I have applied "m25" material to  all beams. but some instances of beams are scheduled under m35, though the value of volume is 0 (but count is there). On checking these particular beams, they are still m25.

Such issues are persistant throughout many files.

Why are these instances occuring.

Can I delete these fields from my schedule?

You can not "Delete" from a schedule. What you can do is filter your schedule.

(Deleting would remove the component from the project)

You will have to look were these unwanted entries coming from. Then you have to find how they are different from the wanted entries.

Then in the filter tab you can create a filter to remove them from the schedule.

If you can not find differentiate the wanted from unwanted entries you will have to create a parameter and fill it with values so that you can differentiate.

maybe I am not able to explain the issue appropriately. the problem is that the instances which are being schedules with volume 0, under some material name actually have a different material assigned to it. That is those beams have m25 assigned, yet are scheduled both under m25 AND M30 (though the assigned material is m25.)

The volume shown is correct under m25 fields, but 0 in m30 (which is correct, but it really should not even be there)

Though these instances are appearing in the counts.

I think this would require examining the project.

Could be that in some of the families there are still (small) parts with m30 assigned?

Maybe caused by join conditions?

If you select "Itemize every instance" in the grouping tab of your schedule. Then open your schedule, select one of the offending rows and click highlight in model, this should show you one of the components which you do not want in your schedule. Maybe this already gives a clue of the  cause.

If you are able to upload small part of your project with the schedule, some good parts and some parts that should not be in the schedule, maybe we can have look at the cause.

Hey here is my project. I have purged most element to make the file small. Just kept the structural frame. If you check the schedule -02- Concrete Quantities.... u will see the problem

Ihad already tried itemising and going element by element, but the fields which show the problem have a different material.

I tried switching the join order with the beams but I dnt think it worked out.

Will be really grateful for ur help.

Ok here is an example of your issue.

Materials.png

To find an issue in your project I added material area to the schedule and increased decimals. Area has larger values then volume and gave me the first hint. You see that volume is at 0 while area is at 0.207 m2.

I deleted most objects till I got one of the problematic ones left.

So it is clear what causes the entries. How you are going to solve it is up to you, modifying the structure or filtering the unwanted results out of the schedule.

Thanks for your help.. I got how to filter out the solutions...

But I didn't understand the actual modelling issue.. Is it an alignment problem? Why exactly is the area coming?

Would be happy if you can explain....?

I understood there is an issue but not what that issue is....

I mean after itemising I had already identified the elemnets that were causing a problem, but am not able to understand why it is so.
I have tried aligning them- they are aligned.
Unjoining the beams from the columns by separating the ends solves the issue, but rejoining them again causes it.
I have checked whether the columns and beams are aligned properly,
but am not able to understand what the modelling issue is.
I am sure I am not understanding something very simple.
How do I correct the model?

Ok. If you look at one of the footings and a beam.

In the project you have beams that cross the footing. On the left side you see an example as you have it in the project.

Material.png

When it crosses/interacting with the footing the beam is automatically split. In that instance Revit will pick up the material from the footing, generating that area line. Why Revit does this and if this is common practice I can not tell you. My knowledge of structural applications is too limited for that.

On the right side I have the same footing, but used two beams. As it is not crossing/interacting with the footing no area line is generated.

wow.. I didnt know that...thanks

but what about the upper level? the beams are split up on the sides of the columns.. whats the issue there? as highlighted in yellow

And what about the upper levels? the beams are split in two parts on either sides of the columns but still (some are plane is generated) the issue exists. (example marked in yellow)

What do I do there? how do I resolve those parts?

Thanks a lot for your help. I really didnt know all this.

Good to be learning 🙂

Here something similar is happening

Beam.png

If you look carefuly you will see that on one side (with the arrow) the beam is not touching the column.

On the other side it is interacting with / entering the column.

This beam is 230x660 = 0.152 m2 same as in the material area.

I am no structual engineer, so how to solve it is for somebody else to decide.
