Match Internal Origin Orientation of Linked File

Hello,

I am starting a new project as a sub-consultant to a general contractor (GC) and the GC has their own Revit file set up with an established base point and survey point. I have been learning about sharing coordinates and survey points and I think that I have successfully coordinated these two points but the northern orientation seems off. When I make the internal origin visible in my file the "Y" axis is straight vertical and the "X" axis is straight horizontal and when I go into the Revit file produced by the GC those axes are rotated away from the orientation in my new file. Does anyone know what step in the process of setting up a shared file that I am missing to get the northern orientations to align? I am hesitant to begin populating my model until I ensure that it is aligning properly with the GC's Revit file. Please see images of the project base point and internal origin below (GC on left, new on right). Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for the question @asaundersZX5X6!

The first thing to check is the Orientation parameter for your view. In order to have views oriented the same this parameter should be set the same (Project North / True North / Scope Box) when comparing different views/projects.

From your screenshot, you could have the projects properly coordinated, but in one view the Orientation is set to True North where the X/Y axis are angled), and in the other view, the Orientation is set to Project North (where the X/Y axis are straight horizontal/vertical).

If you are seeing that the Orientation is set to Scope Box, then you would need to check the position/orientation of the associated scope box for the different views. As you are currently trying to confirm that the different projects are properly coordinated, it would be simpler to use True/Project North for comparison purposes.

Hi Lance,

Thank you for your quick response. The view in the GC's Revit file is set to project north that is the setting that was used in my new file. I changed the view setting in my new file to true north and the view then matched the view in the GC's file set to project north but since each view is not referencing the same north; does this indicate that project north or true north is incorrectly defined in my new project? When the project base point in each file is clicked upon it reports the same angle from project north that can be seen in the images posted in my first post that only leads to further confusion.

Thank you!

what i usually do is:

  • link the GC model into your project using Project base point to project base point (PBPtoPBP).
  • once loaded, go to the Manage ribbon > Project Location panel > Coordinates drop down.
  • Pick Acquire Coordinates
    • pick the GC's link in the view
    • you'll see the survey point move.
    • select the PBP and it should match the GC's coordinates and angle to  true north.
