Manipulating DWG files using Revit

My client wants/expects me to be able to manipulate a Residence set of plans bought off the internet. They bought the "cad set".

Upon contacting the company that is selling the plan, they tell me that the plan was drawn in AutoCad DWG.

Does anyone know what I will be able to do with this?

For example-If my client wants to change the exterior walls, will I be able to change the roof (using Revits roof system)

to suit?

I suppose you have a bunch of 2D .dwg files...

• If so, you can use into your Revit Project: Insert > Link CAD (preferable to Import CAD because it can be updated) to load into the background of Plan Views ( or Elevations and Sections ) and then "redraw " over your Revit entities taking the background as .a guide.

Before inserting the CAD files as background into your Views is good to check them in AutoCAD and clean them if necessary. If a CAD file contains multiple views then split the file into multiple files the contain only one view ( a file for Level 1 , another for Level 2 and so on)

• You can also Insert 2d Details as they are in Drafting Views 
• and into Editable Families  . You can insert into families 3d .dwg files too ( a lot of seating objects are made like this) especially when you don't need to use geometric parameters but only material parameters.

No.  You only have the CAD file to be used as the background to build your Revit model from.  If the revisions are minor, you may better off be fixing the in AutoCAD.

Nope!  Unless the files are made in AutoCAD Architecture that use AEC entities (Walls, Windows...etc). In this case you will be able to Export/Import these entities via IFC .....not perfect ,but enough good...

I wonder if AutoCAD Architecture uses DWG files?

I wonder if the newer Autocad 3D works very similar to Revit?

I wonder if all the elevations are draw in 2D in this 3000.00 cad set that it looks like I'm going to end up killing myself recreating a decent revit plan with.

I wonder if it might have been better buying a licensed est of paper plans for 2000.00 that i could simply redraw!?

AutoCAD Architecture uses DWG files, but the files need to be exported to vanilla AutoCAD in order for AutoCAD to view the model, or you need to install Object Enabler in AutoCAD to view the model (in such case, you cannot modify them).

No.  Not at all.

It might, if you will be using the program for more than one job.
