Make Raster Image Unselectable

Anonymous
Not applicable
I am using imported Raster images in Revit Architecture 2010 to trace and I need to make them unselectable. I know that I can 'Pin' them so I cannot move them, but I need to keep from actually selecting them. I thought I could use Design Options, but Raster images cannot be moved from the Main Model and thus remain selectable. Any ideas?

You could use worksets to "protect" them.

Jeff,

I think you are missing the point. I posted a similar post 2-3 weeks and did not receive a reply. There is alot of work on renovation and remodel. Often there are only paper drawings of the older buildings. So we have to scan them and use them as a background image. The workset option is a lot of work for smaller projects. I thought I could create a separate level and adjust the view depth. That did not work.

What I (we) would like is a simple option, like in 3DS Max, to freeze the image and not have it be selectable all the time. Would that be impossible to implement?

I understand the issue. I wish it could be done as well. I was simply
trying to give an option within the current functionality of Revit. I
understand this is something user would like to do now but it is not
possible.

Not being a programmer/developer (that is not my role at Autodesk) I don't
want to speculate on the possibilities and limitations of this kind of
functionality.

While we are on the subject:

I am using PNG files with Transparency as I need to overlay and align two drawings (1 is a laser scan at 1' off of the ground and the other is at 4' off of the ground) for tracing purposes. In Revit 2009 this worked well (with the exception of the pixels 'swimming' around as I pan, zoom and nudge walls), but in 2010, when I close my drawing and then re-open it, the PNG's lose transparency and show up having a 100% opaque black background. Looks like a bug?

If the paper dwgs were scanned into pdf's, why not run the pdf's thru Adobe
Illustrator, convert to dwgs, and link in as the underlays. Just a thought

Hi Mike,

I am not scanning paper drawings. I work for a company that uses robotic scanners that are wheeled through an existing building. The scanners use two LIDAR scanners to collect floorplan data that then gets processed into PNG files with transparency. These PNG files are then brought into Revit and overlayed, so that we can see the lower 1' scan and the upper 4' scan together for tracing purposes. There seems to be a bug in Revit 2010 that did not exist in 2009 where the PNG's lose transparency after closing and then re-opening the file.

Sorry, I misunderstood.........as I've not played with png files yet in
2010, I'm afraid I can't be much of help.

Use 'imageframe' sys variable (value 0) to turn off the border frame. Then they become un-selectable. Use same varriable to turn (1 or 2) them back on.

Cheers,

Alok

Well here we are 3 years later. Again I will ask the question,"Is there a way to lock an image to prevent selection?". This is still a issue for those of us still doing renovation work and using scanned drawings for backgrounds. I keep using ACA hoping that Revit would finally catch up with ACA in that area. Revit has many fine features I would like to enjoy, but still, the bottom line is getting the project out the door. I use Revit on small non-critical projects that I have a lot of time to play with just to try and keep up with some of the changes.

As far as the programming side, it cannot be that difficult when measured against the complexity of Revit as a whole.

Just some thoughts late at night.

Joe

You realize that 9 years ago when this post originated we didn't have those tools right?

Hopefully someone wasn't tasked with starting at the beginning of the forum and finding all the unsolved posts, providing an answer now that it is possible, and marking them as solved.

I'm sure it was not able to do so, but seeing as it is now possible, and the thread had not been answered I thought I'd just post the solution, sorry if answering an old post is a problem in some way.
