Local file for C4R??

Dear Revit users,

I have having difficult time to understand how a model is uploaded and downloaded in the cloud service C4R.

My understanding for worksharing with the cloud model is like below;

When I open the cloud model on my pc, the local file or temporary model is created on my pc but it is hidden as if I am looking at the central model.

The local model which I am modifying is connected to the cloud model which has been accessed by other users so that I also can see changes by other users is happening.

Because I am modifying my local model, I have to download the newest model as well as I have to synchronize mine.

In that sense, I am not working on central model but local model.

Then is the hidden local file is journey or local cache or something???

I want you to explain the mechanisms of C4R if I am wrong.

It hurts my brain....

Yes, there is a "hidden" local file.

I have further questions...

Does the local cache work just like the created local files on pc when I don’t use cloud server but the server on my form? Or any differences??

What if I save the file onto my desktop, what is going to happen to the local cache??

I got message the I have to overwrite the opened file when I tested this situation and opened the the visible local file without detaching it.

Why I am saying this is, I had sometimes the issue with other members that elements stayed as borrowed even though other members said they relinquished all items and didn’t save or synchronize their changes. 

In my understanding, you should be able to religlish items the button “relinquishe all mine” when you don’t want to save the change on the file after choosing “do not save” so that other members can modify them.

However, I saw sometimes elements stayed as borrowed then I couldn’t touch these items.

I noticed this person save his opened file on to his computer everyday.

He doesn’t really detach the local files when he created local visible file on his pc.

Will it cause any trouble like above if on your pc there are always temporary? Local files.

as I understand C4R , it works more simple then we expect to from our LAN worksharing experience..

• So , if we open the local file from its location (C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\ \CollaborationCache )  where it is automatically placed under an abstract codified name ( it is supposed you would not need to access this file) , you have two options: 
  •  a. to open it as a local file  (that is connected to the Cloud located file) -all you work in your file will be syncronized in the Cloud Central and once finished your work ,you will see that the new local file from C:\Users.......it is updated.
  •  b. or Detach it from the Central - open the file and save it where you want into your LAN area.
  • it is very important to preserve Revit user name that has to match with your Autodesk Account user name
  • if you open under other user name (Autodesk user) then you will be able to open the file as Detached. Anyway you will loose linked file path and you'll need to reconfigure this path.

This morning, I tested several things and it becomes clearer.

As I observed how the local cache is updated, it was exactly the same as I use work sharing within a server in my office.

The local cache was updated when I synchronized the model with the central module on the hub and saved the change on my PC, but still within the cache file. So the local model has to be updated manually.

Another thing is about saving the local file onto the desktop. When  I dave the file, it was detached with the cloud central model and become a new central model. There are no longer connected to the cloud model.

The cache is necessary to keep work performance as I read some article.

But it will be recreated when I open from the cloud, so I think deleting unused project file cache is ok.

Still the incident I could not modify elements although other users said they relinquished all item is a mystery.

We decided to synchronize the model when we finish own work for now.
