Loading a Family into the Project

Quick Q. Hopefully this is something silly that has a simple solution. I find that in my workflow I keep hitting the same stumble. Only a minor thing, but when I load a Family into the main project....the main project defaults to an open window that is typically the last place I can or want to load the family into.

For example, I am working in an RCP. I create a new lighting fixture family, click to Load into Project.....annnnnnnd instead of loading that component into the open RCP view....it loads into the open Lighting Schedule. It seems like Revit defaults to views that cannot host that component. The favorite view it likes to open is the Info Drafting View that is the default view whenever I open any Revit file as I have set up in my template.

I am using Revit LT 23.0.11.19. This has been an issue with every version of Revit I have used going back to 2016. I assume this is just the way the program "works" but fingers crossed there is some box in a sub-menu within a sub-menu that I can uncheck to make Revit "work" a little better.

Instead of loading the family within the family have you tried clicking insert in the project (Load Family) loading it and it will show up on your project browser try dragging/ placing in your desired view.

Still not ideal for a good workflow, but it is an option. To load in an instance, that would require saving the family to a folder and then finding that family in the main revit file again. So we are adding a few steps. Not to mention keeping track of which instance saved in the folder is the most up to date. There could be an instance of that family in the main project that may be more up to date than the saved version on the server.

I assume there is no way currently to pick which view in the main project is the default one when you load a family from the family editor.

I'm using 2024 through my job, and this is  STILL an issue. I already have a Revit file open, I'm loading a piece of casework in from a 'container' file that helps streamline our processes. I start in the current project on the correct floor plan I want the family to load into. Every single time, Revit defaults to the "Splash Page" and gives a literal error that the family cannot be placed in the current view in the current mode. It makes no sense, because you would think it would default to the previous view the user was on - if this isn't a check box now, it needs to be added!
