Linked survey cad file moves away in view after being reloaded

I have linked a survey to a site model and acquired coordinates, but a frustrating thing is whenever I reloaded it, it moved away and I have to reposition it. What is the way to fix this? Thanks!

Have you considered just starting over with a clean slate?  Reset Shared Coordinates in the Revit Project, remove the "Revit60" named UCS in the DWG, and then Link (via Auto Positioning Center to Center), reposition and Acquire Coordinates of the DWG again.

What do you mean remove the UCS in the DWG? I did reset many times and link it via auto position center to center etc.

You need to acquire coordinates after reset shared coordinates, relink, move the link to position.

Open DWG. Type UCSMAN. Highlight and delete the "Revit60...". Probably reads "Revit 60 Default Site". Just delete it - whatever it's called.  Then Reset Shared Coordinates in Revit to "clean the slate" entirely.

Also keep the view that you linked the DWG into originally assigned to Project North. When the view is changed to True North the dwg will "jump" out of position. I keep a separate view for linking DWG files (if I have to do it all) and leave it assigned to Project North.

Okay, I thought I have done all those. But I did change the location of the linked file. So to have a clean start, I just removed the linked survey completely, set the view with project north,  are the below setting correct?

  • Should "orient to view" be checked? what does it really mean?
  • what does it exactly mean by "Auto - Center to Center" ? what is the center of the Revit model and what is the center of the survey dwg file?

I ran into this issue before. If you set your DWG link as Auto center to center, any new object(s) inside AutoCAD that is far away from the origin point will automatically reset from center to center point. For these cases I would simply set manual origin to origin so you wouldn't run into issue.

I noticed a very strange thing - the once linked survey file is always shown next to Survey Point instead of "Default Site".  This file is no longer in the model and won't be used anymore.  How to get rid of the highlighted info without affecting the model?

I am not able to delete the old file name ( which has already been removed not just unloaded) and use the current linked survey file.

It is just a name.  Run Reset Shared Coordinates.

The extent of elements in both AutoCAD and Revit is equivalent to the imaginary rectangle you'd draw from the two elements that are farthest apart in the file, in x/y (and z direction for extent warnings in Revit). When Revit is using Center to Center it is the center of that rectangle, defined by the extent of the file.

The center of the AutoCAD file's extent aligned with the center of the Revit file's extent. This is usually a meaningless relationship because their extents are not related in any useful way. It is chosen by Revit in an attempt to keep the geometry of the linked file close to Revit's own internal origin.

Which positioning option do you think makes the most sense and you normally use to link survey?

Normally if your survey drawing is constantly updated, you would choose origin to origin. I know this may not be possible, so choose manual - origin. If this isn't not an option, choose manual - center.

If you know what the overall extent of the DWG file is before linking AND you know that it is close the AutoCAD's origin (rarely happens with civil files) then you could use Auto - Origin to Origin. Since civil and landscape files are rarely ever close to the AutoCAD origin it is recommended to use Auto - Center to Center like the other replies recommend. Once you Acquire Coordinates from that file then Revit and it (DWG file) are in sync. As mentioned earlier do this in a specific view assigned to Project North and leave this view alone afterward. Then anytime the file is reloaded it will stay put.

Also after using Acquire Coordinates, select the DWG and disable shared coordinates for the DWG so Revit doesn't attempt to store a Named UCS in the file. It's a bit counterintuitive but because we usually move the DWG around to get it into position around the building Revit thinks it needs a UCS that AutoCAD can use to align any exports to DWG from Revit. Exporting to DWG using Shared Coordinates eliminates the necessity for that. If you exported using Project Coordinates then it would be "helpful".
