Line based generic family won't schedule

I have created this line based family to create a schedule for egress distances. For some reason it won't schedule. The schedule needs to show path and distance. When I create the schedule, I do not see the TRAVEL_DISTANCE parameter to add to the schedule. HELP!!

The TRAVEL_DISTANCE must be a shared parameter.

Family Parameter should not have been selected? When I select Shared Parameter it takes me to the company Shared Parameter txt. Idiot proof directions, please.

Well it tells youright there that Family parameters cannot appear on Tags or schedules.  Your project and your families must share the same Shared Parameters file.  Go back to your project and identify where the file is located, and choose the same file when adding parameters to the family.

Another question. How can I make this line follow the slope of a stair and document egress travel distances on stairs.

For that you will need to use an adaptive family so that you can pick the start and end points more freely.
