It's okay to explode CAD imports in families if you copy elements over to a fresh new family

Is it iconoclastic to say that fully exploding CAD drawings inside families, changing selected element types to builtin types (e.g. lines to "Detail Items") and then copying them (an only them) to a new default family doesn't cause the common issue of cluttering types that often come with imported CAD drawings when that family then gets imported into a revit project?

It's okay to explode - in a Family. Just keep an eye on the debris field. That is, exploding will likely introduce new stuff, such as Linestypes, etc.  I definitely wouldn't explode in a working Project.  Also, your workflow is a good one. Sounds like you are exploding CAD, cleaning it up as the case may be and Clipboard Copy/Pasting it to virgin Family.  Did I get that right?

Yes, that's all correct.

I wish there was a way Revit told you what was imported with the family (all line styles, patters etc.) I was trying to list them from a script, but I can't tell if anything is missing.

On a complete side note, you wouldn't know how to OpenAndActivate a family template by any chance?

I don't know what it means to "Open and Activate a Family Template". I know how to modify an RFT.  Find the RFT file and change the extension to RFA and then Open it with Revit.  Add/Remove content, Save and Close RFA. Then change the extension back to RFT. Now you can use it as a Template for New RFAs.
