Is it possible to convert a family into wall based?

(is wall based = will host only on walls?)

And even before that: How can i tell right now if my family is wall based, face based or (are there more x-based?)

Nest the non-hosted family into a Generic Model Wall Hosted family template.  

TIP: uncheck "Always Vertical" and check "Work Plane-Based" in family before nesting.  

...you may not even need nest it.  Checking "Work Plane-Based" and unchecking "Always Vertical" may give the family the functionality you want by allowing family to be placed on a Workplane or a Face in Project.

I normally create a shared / non-host family and nest it in various types of hosted families: wall, floor, ceiling, face. When you need to change the family you only need to do it once to the source family.

-Wall hosted can only be placed on Walls. 

-Open family and check the "Host" under Properties.

If host is empty line - what does it say?

Empty=Non-hosted family

You can change that by checking "Work Plane-Based"

edit the family and select the Family Category and Parameters tool (upper Left corner of ribbon)

under family parameters scroll down to Host and under the value it will tell you what it is.

Checking "Work Plane-Based" and unchecking "Always Vertical" Still doesn't cause the sign to stick/snap to walls, "Host" field is still Empty.

So, will i HAVE to nest it within a wall faced family? or is there a possible way to change the family itself?

Yes there is. Do exactly what I told you to do in Message #2. I gave you two options. The second one was: check "Work Plane-Based" and uncheck "Always Vertical". Then when you place the family in the Project, pay attention to the Contextual tab. You'll have two placement options to pick from. "Place on Face" and "Place on Work Plane". If you want to host the Family on a Wall Face, then pick "Place on Face".

Now, if you really need the Family to be strictly a Wall hosted Family and nothing else, then nest the Family into the Generic Model wall based.rft

Do either one of these methods work for you?  If so, how about a solution credit?  That would work for me.

i see. nested. imported to project i can place it on new walls. but i can't place it on walls that are part of linked RVT.
