How can an invisible shared parameters cause performance issues?

According to this Autodesk support article an invisible shared parameters can be responsible for slow performance on opening, synchronizing or accessing dialogs in worksharing Revit models.

This article doesnt explain how this can effect performance.

It's a long time ago when we used a plugin to list doors and windows being mirrored or not. Somehow this plugin ran wild and created tens of thousands invisible parameters with the same name, dragging model performance to a crawl. Each action took about 5 to 10 minutes to execute. Autodesk Support managed to modify the project file to get rid of all those parameters to restore normal performance.
