Interrupt Railings at Landings

I have a stair that is inside a stairwell thus I do not need the railings to run continuous around the landing. When I edit the railing path and take out the segments at the landing, I get the message” The Railing line must be a single connected Sketch. If you want separate pieces of Railing, create two or more separate Railings.”  So I created one side, but when I go back to the Railing command and select “Place on Host’ to add the other side to edit, the stair is not being selected as a host and no railing is being placed. If I Sketch the Rail Path, the railing is placed flat on the ground.

The rails highlighted below in yellow at #1 are the ones I don’t need. #2 is what I want on both sides, but have only gotten as far as you see in #2. Suggestions please? Is there a better way?

For the rails that are coming out flat, make sure your sketch line is on the stairs (steps) and not on the stringers, else they won't host properly.

You will need two different rails though if interrupting them around the landing.

Yes, I know. My problem is how to achieve the 2 different rails. Not sure how to go about it. The method I describe in my original post is not working

Which version of Revit are you using? And which type of stair/railing?

You can't have 2 separate paths of railings in the same sketch. As @Anonymous said, you need to create two railings, one at a time.

Alfredo - My problem is I do not how to go about creating 2 separate railings one at a time for a single stair system.. Do you make 2 stair systems, create the separate rails, and drag one back to the other, then delete the second 'work' copy of the stair?

@PhilvK

Use the Railing tool multiple times. For example, in this illustration: the railing marked as 1 is created by default. That one does not need any changes. The railing number 2 is the result of editing the other part of the railing that was created by default, leaving only the portion on the right side, deleting the rest. If you a need a 3rd segment, you just use the railing tool to create that segment.

I easily got to points 1 and 2 shown in your sketch. It's when I try to add a 3rd segment, which would be on the open side in your sketch. The railing tool won't let me select a host, and when I try to sketch the path, the rail ends up on the ground plane.

@PhilvK Create a new railing in plan view. Draw a line that is on top of the treads. Finish. Then in a 3d view, select the railing on the ground, select new host, and click on the stairs.

For anyone else coming across this problem, I find it simpler to create the railing, copy, edit path and delete the segments not needed for the first portion, then close the sketch.  Then paste in place the original railing, edit the path and delete the segments not needed for the second portion, etc.

That is doable because you are using 2019 or newer. The function wasn't available when the original question was asked.

I think I found the solution:

Either draw the stairs with railings automatic, or add them to host stair after drawing stairs.  (Architecture Panel, Select Railing pulldown,  and select "place on stair ramp").  Select the stair host.

Than in 3d view select the railing line that's wrong.  (For me, it's the railing on the exterior that wraps around the landing that is enclosed within a stairwell by walls, I just want railings on the stairs)

Select "Edit Path" from  the Modify/Railings panel that pops up, then on the plan view delete all the railings that aren't right, as well as the opposite side railing down the stairs on the far exterior side that you want to keep.  you'll add that back in a minute, but the program needs a continuous run of the railing.   So if you try to just delete the horizontal railings about the landing, and  leave the two exterior railings down the stairs, it will give you an error that the railings are disconnected and won't let you do it.

Then repeat the process to add the railing to the host stair again, .  It will re draw ALL the railings.  Go Through the steps above (Edit Path), but this time leave the opposite railing down the stairs.  Be Careful you don't leave duplicate railings in the same space.

That was driving me nuts
