Internal wall footprint

I'm trying to find a way to calculate the total footprint of all internal walls in my model. Either by schedule, using Dynamo Script or RevitAPI. I understand that I can schedule out all walls' lengths and widths, and then create a calculated parameter, but that doesn't exclude the overlays, so the number is not precise. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

What do you mean by overlays? Joined walls, Inserts and Opening?

 

And did you try the Dynamobim forum?

A filtered wall schedule to isolate "interior" wall types should give you the result without any extra effort, see image. Two wall types, one using wall joins and the other with join disabled...both provide the correct "wall area footprint" when compared with a floor sketch of the footprint. The length and width values vary based on where the walls stop and start but the resulting area is the "same" in the schedule. Is that what you're looking for?

 

The schedule uses a calculated parameter for Wall Area by multiplying the Wall's Width * Length parameters.

Sadly not when Inserts, Openings and Joined walls w/ any element (such as other walls/column/...) are envolved. The schedule will always report the Brutto LxW

 

If one may consider Roombook as a Revit builtin option, it would be the only accurate builtin scheduling/quantification which combines Openings/Inserts/Columns with walls in the same schedule

True but a wall will still require the overall length for top plate at openings and doors so the wall's true length is not altered by them, just the length of the sill plates required. The purpose of such information, who will use it and for what is missing from the "question" at hand.

Thank you for all replies. 

 

@ToanDN It's a project requirement, specific to my location. The Department of Education asks for internal wall and partition area - what they'll do with such information I have no idea! We've been calculating it manually but I'm trying to find a way to automate the process.

 

@RDAOU Thanks for suggesting Roombook and Dynamobim forum, I will look into them.

 

@SteveKStafford thank you, but the schedule doesn't give me the precision I need. I'll try to explain it better.

 

Here's how Revit calculates length of the wall - centerline to centerline, regardless of the location of the reference line. In this case it schedules out total wall footprint area as >16 sqm, where the correct area would be 15.75 sqm. I know that in this scale it doesn't make any difference, but in a large project it becomes an issue.

I believe Dynamo does work when converting walls to geometry and retrieving certain faces and their lengths.

I tried with a few walls and it seemed to get the correct lengths returning. All one would need to do it pair up the face length with the corresponding wall width and you'd get your area (the last node is what I believe your desired length result is). Note I've only tried it on small scale so it might blow up on large projects.

 

It may even work with openings etc as long as you only select the faces of the geometry closest to the floor and exclude any vertical and upper faces. For example only retrieving faces within a 100mm bounding box of the level plane the walls are on, or only getting the faces with the lowest Z values.
