Inserting structural column

Is there a way to set the face of a structural column as it's insertion point?

Yes. In the column's family file, select two planes that intersect each other. In the properties dialog box, check "defines origin". That intersection will be the new insertion point.

Ok, since I am working on creating my first models, i have to tread lightly on modifying families. Will I be modifying the instance of the rectangular column in my project? I don't want to affect rectangular column insertion points on future columns.

Then, do not modify the origin in the family. Just align the face of the column in the project to a grid line or reference plane and lock it.
