Insert From File - Quit upgrading the links....

Is there a best practice for inserting from files that contain linked models? It drives me crazy when I want to insert a drafting view from an old project using "Insert From File", Revit tries to upgrade all of the links to whatever version I am using. Who cares about the version of Revit, I just want the lines and text from a drafting view...

This makes it incredibly slow to "Insert from File" which is annoying, but maybe I am doing something wrong/not optimal.

Anyone share my pain and have suggestions for making it better?

Open the original file where the drafting views reside.  Select the views (or Sheets contain only drafting views) from the browser, right click and Save to New File.  Then you can just insert views from the new file, which is much quicker because they only have a few drafting views/sheets.

Upgrading Links during an 'Insert from File' operation is one of the dumbest and most annoying things that Revit does - right next to those single-option dialog boxes that pop up and stop lengthy operations for no reason but to make sure the user clicks a thing . . . but I digress.  Oh, those are part of THIS process as well?  Double-whammy.  Anyway -

We typically detach an old model first, then remove the links, then upgrade it and save it in the new project folder.  I'm not sure if that's the best practice or not, but it really cuts down on the time involved in getting a couple of stock details, text, or linework out of a model that was saved in a previous version.
