Incorrect wall measurements

Hello,

I'm a student to Revit and had a strange challenge with which my professor didn't even know what the problem was. I had problems downloading 2021 and 2020, was successful with 2019. No challenges with program until I was drawing a basic floor plan. Using Residential Template; Wall set to Basic 8". Line location set to Finish Face: Exterior. I begin to draw my lines, first wall is to be 28' long, then create a corner with another wall of 28', so on. When I press enter to check the measurement is correct, each line now has an addition of 4",  (so both the first and the second line are now 28'-4") which tells me that it is somehow not allowing the walls to be continuous (even though Chain is selected on) and that it is adding the thickness of the new wall. I was the only person in my class to have this challenge. We thought it was a glitch during my download and install. I uninstalled the 2019 version, and was able to successfully install 2021 version. The problem continues.

I have attached a screen clip of my computer specs, as well as screen clips of the process in Revit.

Your dimensions are correct.  Your last dimension is from the end of the wall to the centreline, so it adds half the thickness of the wall.  Note that you can specify where the dimensions start and finish.  Tab through when dimensioning to select the wall face or the wall centreline.

Thank you for your response, and yes I am aware of the tabbing through-apologies on not being more clear.

Both walls must remain at 28' when measured from the exterior finish. As you can see, even with the mistaken centerline chosen, both walls were increased by 4". When I try to make the second wall, it's almost like the new wall isn't starting out as a continuation of the original wall. I'm having a very hard time trying to figure out how to explain it, and I'm surprised my instructor couldn't figure it out even though we screen-shared. He assumed it was a glitch in the install but I just successfully installed the 2021 version.

I'm not really sure what the issue is.  If the walls need to be 28' from exterior to exterior, move the walls so that that is the case. Note also that when you draw walls you specify where the location line is - such as core centreline, or finished face.  Typically we draw the walls roughly and then adjust the dimension or locations as required.

Thank you for your help. I was messing around with the location line, and changed it to Finish Face: Interior. That seems to have worked in that all walls were connected well in their corners and did not add unwanted wall thickness. I don't know if this is the permanent solution, but I will work with it for now!This is my first day working with the program, so I'm still very new.

This is not related to your software version. You can try these steps to have the dimension you want on your model:

1. Use wall location line on finish face

2. Use space bar when you start modelling wall to change wall's orientation (finish side)

3. On the corners, keep the location lines at finish side and enter your dimension

Don't get hung up on that.  Just draw the walls and adjust them to the correct positions afterwards. Also note that if you select a wall, the temporary or permanent dimensions can beadjusted to correct the position.

also the Temporary Dimensions can be moved by garbing the grips and selecting the element you want to measure to.  once adjusted, Revit will remember the selection.
