Import model to "Existing Phase" Layer

I have a model that we did back in 2017, and now we are doing an addition. The model that we put together back in 2017 is now an existing condition and I want to link this model into our new model, but it imports them as 'New Construction'. I have tried phase mapping in properties, and it didn't do anything. Maybe I am doing it wrong or maybe there is a better way to do this. Thanks for any help. This is the Phase mapping that did not work...This is the Phase mapping that did not work...

Your mapping is correct.  Existing in the host is mapped to New Construction phase in the link so that the all element in the link under its New Construction and any preceding phases are Existing in your new model.

You need not to worry about Demolition and New Construction mapping since you will be creating new elements in the host.

By the way, Demolition phase is generally not needed but it is another topic.

What do you mean it doesn't work? What's your expectation?

Step 1:

  1. Open the Linked Model
  2. Go to Manage Phasing
  3. Combine all Phases with Existing (This will shift everything in the old model to Existing)
  4. Create a new Phase call New Construction (this will be basically empty)
    • You do not need the Demolishing Phase but if you insist on it you can create a new one which will also be empty
  5. Save and close

Step 2:

  1. Reload the link in the host model
  2. Map the Phases
    • Existing = Existing
    • Demo = Demo
    • New = New

...my expectation would be that all those elements that had their Phase Demolished set to "None" in the Link would still continue to "exist".   Do you know what I mean?   Anyways, love to hear what you would like to "see" happen to all those elements that are alive and well in 2017.  😉

The issue is (based on my phase mapping above, which yall said is correct) When I change my phase filter, from 'Show All' to 'Show Existing' the linked model dissapears. When I change the phase filter to 'Show New' it reappears. So the phase mapping didn't seem to actually change anything

What is the Phase set to the view? Existing?

If the Phase is Existing then Show Previous shows nothing, Show New shows existing elements.

Change the Phase to New Construction then Show Previous will show existing elements.

Try out the settings given in message 4

In your host model … set the visibility of the Revit Link to View by Host

I have a similar problem. I have a linked model with its existing elements mapped to existing and new construction mapped to new.

However, I would like both the new and existing elements to be mapped to existing in the host model. I created a separate phase for these linked "new" elements meant to be existing. This doesn't work since it is still mapping "Phase 2" (New) to both New and the Phase 1 Phase.

Is the only solution to go into the linked model and change phases directly? This is absurd, since it defeats the whole purpose of phase mapping!!

Each model should have the same number of phases so the views can process them logically in order. For example if you have elements in a link that are assigned to Existing and New Construction and in your host model all the work is later than those two phases...put Existing and New Construction phases in front of your active phase. Then map each of the earlier phases in the link to your own earlier phases...that don't contain anything in your model but allows Revit to display the element in the correct context.

Also for Phase Filters to work properly they MUST MATCH EXACTLY in name between the models. If the phase filters don't match then they won't work, apply graphic overrides properly.
