How to make my first family adjustable

I am creating a family for closet rod and hangers and I was able to get it to mostly work but I can't get adjust the length of it.

This is just a 2d family so I used the linework generic file to start with.

The screen shot shows what happens when I insert it. It will go in ok but if I click on the end nothing happens.

Thanks

You need to use line based family if you want to adjust it. Use this one: Metric Generic Model line based.rft

An another way may be entering numbers to length parameters in the project browser, but I believe what you want is the above one.

Thanks nozci for your ideas.

However, I don't have that .rft in revit 2016.

I started off with the rft file called "generic model line based .rft

Can I assign the length parameter to the length of the rod and then assign

another parameter to the hangers? Would the parameter for the hangers be number?

How does that work?

"generic model line based .rft" is okay, too. It is line based.

You can define a parameter in the familiy like this:

and then draw a dimension to your rod. And select your dimension and click this:

and select your parameter Lrod. That's it. Same for the hanger.

If you draw only lines, not boxes.
Lock the line head to reference, and then set anno for the two references.

You can set a type parameter to control by setting value for a type.

Or set an instance parameter to control by setting different value for every instance, (and can be dragged in the view if the two references's "IsReference" parameter is not "Not Reference".)
