How to make a "truly" dummy tag that can be entered with any value?

Hi, what's the best way to make a truly dummy tag whose tag number can be entered with any value, rather than associated with anything in the model? I'm adding tags all over my drawings, but the dummy tag I make is always associated with something. For example, in the screen capture, the tag for the guardrail is 2. If I add another tag to the guardrail at a different location on the drawing, it will still be 2. If I change it, it would change the first tag. But I'd like to type in any number without any association. There must be an easy way of doing it but I just can't figure out how. Please help.

If it's not tied to information in the model, it's not a tag. It's annotation text.

you are looking for a generic annotation maybe? its a symbol. not a text, not a tag. we use it for our general annotation.

It sounds to me like you might want to add an instance parameter to your railing or other objects you are tagging and then copy and modify your tag to read that new parameter. I would create a shared parameter called Guardrail Instance Tag or something like that.

Add Mark parameter to the label of the Tag.  Mark is an instance parameter and you can enter any number to any element independently from others.

The Mark parameter that I can add after clicking on Edit (Tag Label) is also a type parameter. How do I add an instance parameter?

No.  Mark is not a type parameter.  You must have used Type Mar parameter.  Try again.

I intentionally avoided Type Mark and used Mark, but it still behaves like a type parameter. See screencapture attached.

This is correct.  Now you can enter different marks for different elements when tagging in the project.  Below is using your family.

It appears the issue is OP wants to to have the value be different for the same element. In OPs original post the capture shows 2 tags on the same railing at different spots. The mark parameter is the same because it is the same railing instance.

If you want the tag to be different you need to use a generic annotation family not a tag family.

Yes, you are right. That's what I'm trying to do. Following your suggestion, I made a Generic Annotation family with a tag as instance parameter. So it does what I want to do. But how do I add the leader so it can point to things?

The leader should be a check box when placing the tag. That check box should be at the top left of your screen while placing the tag, under the ribbon bar.
