How to determine the total length of multiple lines

This is something that used to be very easy to do in autocad (with a polyline) and checking the lenght on the properties bar.

When I select multiple lines (chain of lines) the "lenght" data is greyed out.

I hate having to measure every segment separately! It has to be easier... right?

Or, maybe faster, without checking Chain, is: Measure > Measure Along an Element. Hover the mouse over the first item, hit the tab key, and click. The result of the total length would be in the options bar.

Alfredo - Doesn't work here in Revit 2019 with model lines or detail lines. Alas. - Bill

You can use "measure along an element" and tab+select a chain of model lines, except for curves.  Revit 2019 will report the total length of connected straight model lines in the upper left corner of the screen.  If you have a curved segment, you will have to select it individually and the length of the curve will be reported in the Properties box.

You can tab+select a chain of lines and toggle them all back and forth between model and detail lines as needed.

It is amazing what one can learn. In all the years of using Revit I had not realised this feature was there. Very useful.

While I was looking for an answer for Revit, I can use this if I export to AutoCAD. Thank you

Why does everything in revit have to be so difficult? AND, measure 'tool' only measures straight lines. What if I want to measure a chain of lines that includes arcs and/or splines?

Why is Revit the industry standard? It mystifies me.

It cannot be done 'easily'.

I can create a chain of lines. I can select the chain of lines. WHY can I not see the length of the chain of lines?

Model lines only.

Doesn't seem to work on non-straight lines

Thanks for the tip. I assume you've done that in a conceptual mass. Would be nice if I could do it in the project, without having to create a new model to do it in; may as well just dimension all the line segments and sum them in excel.

OK, revit help said to do it in a conceptual design, however I now see that it can be done in a mass in a project. Thanks

This video explains it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEazSiqolHY. You can also start with the Massing & Site tab and use In-Place Mass in the Conceptual Mass ribbon. Draw your line and you can see how long it is. Thank you @ToanDN

I switched to Archicad… problem solved 🙂

Anyway if I recall right switch from detail to model lines, or oposite, tab on a Line to select connected lines and you should be able to see the length of them. I think.

it also does not work like that on multi-splines.

@kb4NXFP

I would not call this a problem.

As mentioned before: if it is a chain of model lines (or a chain of walls), do this:

Modify > Measure along an element > select the first segment > use the Tab click to select the whole chain. Done.

The total length is in the left side of the Options bar.

If it is a chain of detail lines, do this:

Modify > Measure along an element > activate Chain> click on the start point of the chain, then in all the endpoints until you get to the end of the chain. Done.

The total length is in the left side of the Options bar.

The only limitation I see is if the chain includes arcs. It works well with straight segments.

Old thread, but there is a Dynamo script, comes with Revit you don't have to do anything except run it. Works on detail lines, model lines, combinations of those, straight, curved...

Run player, select Calculate Total length of lines.
