How to detect when to export in Shared or Project Internal coordinates?

I am currently operating Revit 2016.

Is it possible to detect, before exporting a dwg, whether I should export my dwg in Shared or Project Internal coordinates?

Taking a step back:

I am asking, because my customers send me DWG files that are exported from their Revit models. Their Revit models are aligned to a point cloud. The customer sending me the Revit model sometimes has little understanding of the workings of Revit (They have a third party develop their model). So, it is up to me to instruct the lowly skilled Revit user how to send me the correct DWG.

Up to now, I have been using the guess and check method. If Shared fails, then I export in Project Internal, or vice versa. It would be nice if there was some way to verify the correct version beforehand.

Sorry, I did not architect my question properly.

I know how to set the units, and I know how to set the coordinates (whether Shared or Project Internal), but what I don't know how to do is how to determine which coordinate to set upon export, say, to match a linked point cloud.

Is there a way to determine whether to export a DWG in Shared or Project Internal, such that it will match a linked point cloud?

If your Revit file has the default coordinates, the .dwg file will have the same default coordinates, regardless of your choice beetween "internal" or "shared".

If your Revit file has precise coordinates that you have set by using Specify coordinates at point, your .dwg file will have the same coordinates of your Revit fille if you export as "Shared", but if you export as Internal, your DWG file will have the default coordinates. 

Therefore, the only way that your DWG file inherits specific coordinates is when your Revit file has specific coordinates, and the export is created with the "Shared" choice. 

So, does your Revit file has specific coordinates, yes or no? That is the question, and this does not have anything to do with your point cloud file. Unless, the point cloud file has been inserted into a Revit file, and some specific coordinates have been set.

If I understand you right, I am able to export the DWG in shared coordinates to always obtain the correct export, whether or not the Revit file has specific coordinates. So, it seems that it is best to always export as Shared coordinates. Then, in what case will I need to export as Project Internal? Is there a method to determine if a Revit file has precise coordinates set (for example if the file is unfamiliar to the user)?

No, that's not what I said. Please read my previous post again. What I said, in other words is: your DWG will have shared coordinates if both of these conditions are present:

1) Your Revit model has the true coordinates of your building, not just the default coordinates of the Revit template

2) When you do the export, the option for "Shared" is selected.

After rereading, I think I understand your comments.

So, I may use the Shared coordinate option, when exporting a dwg, if the model does or does not have specific coordinates set. I can only use Project Internal coordinates if no specific coordinates have been set.
