How to cut wall around column

Hello, I am trying to cut this wall around a column that is placed inside. I have tried to both cut and join the two, but nothing seems to work.

Graphically or Physically?

If the former, edit the family and add a masking region.  If the latter, edit the family and add a void, set the family to Cut with void when loaded, then Cut geometry the wall and the column in project.

Preferably it would be physical.
