How to cut out parts of imported families?

Can someone please help with this?

I have imported a roof sheet family onto my project and i am laying out the roof sheets on-top of the roof but i need to cut it out on the top and i dont know how to?

Have you considered applying a material to the roof that represents what you are trying to do with model elements?

yeah but arent materials only materials? 

I am actually trying to archieve the grooved metal sheeting look. From my understanding of how revit works i thought this was only possible by actually modelling the grooved look? is there another way?

Yes, but a model is a representation. Usually, roofs are not modeled with their tiles or corrugated panels. It can be done, yes, but it is time consuming, and since during design development the shape of a roof can change multiple times, the roof is represented as if it were made of flat planes. What is the purpose of modeling these tiles or sheets?

i just genuinely want to get them looking as realistic as possible for rendering purposes.

I understand that is time consuming but the projects i am working on arent that big. 

I would really appreciate if you can please tell me the best and most efficient way to do this?

If you download one of the family I create, you can simply add holes to the roof and the corrugated mullion will adapt to the hole

Hey guys i have tried to create a sloped glazing system to do this i a have a couple of questions

1. you will see on this attached image that mullions arent facing the correct way on the roofs valleys. I need to spin them on these sections about 45 degrees so they are facing the correct way. Do you know the best way to do this?

2. Also i need to change the material of the glass in the sloped glazing system family but i cant find where to change the material. It needs to be the same material as the mullion not glass.

I figured out how to spin the mullions on one section only.

I just cant figure out how to change the glass material for the system family?

One last question.

When i rotate the individual sections of the roof you will see that now i have some mullion sticking out below the roofs bottom perimeter. I need to clean this up some how so they are flat with the bottom of the roof is this possible?

Yeah.  Don't use that roof sheet family, it is useless.  Use what have been suggested in #6 or #7.

I got your method to work and i understand how to do it now. Only issue is with the file you made is that when i model a roof with valleys it has big chunk missing out of the sheets. I can fix this up on the ridges by just modelling ridge cap but the valleys arent so easy. Can you suggest how to fix this?

If you want those edge condition, you can use the adaptive method or railing. I would recommend using railing. All you need to do is pick the roof edge and then host it on roof. See attached file to see what works best for you.

Hey Syman

No i meant on the bottom of the sheets where they are cut at angle (in Australia we call them valleys) you have shown me how to cap the top of the sheets (in Australia we call them ridges) 

Take a look at the word attachment in the previous post i  sent. It shows the sheets at the bottom where they are on a angle in the valleys with bits of sheeting missing out of them eg they arent straight. 

How can i make these valley edges straight?

I cant put ridge capping on the bottom valleys obviously because that is not how valley are built it need a straight edge

If i can get this fixed then ive litteraly solved this corrugated roof problem

I would use the same approach creating railing profile with V shape and then attached it to the roof. Once you have that, you should be able to hide those broken edges.

You observed it's an issue the OP is having because he is on LT. Yah, I'm having no issues with any technique on Full Revit. Roof painting joins great, no matter what its comic strip boundary longitudinal extents are.
