How to create a metal mesh/grating floor

I'm fairly new to Revit, and I've seen a few posts that address one aspect of this process or another, but none that go through it from start to finish. What I'm trying to do is create a metal mesh or grating floor, like the one pictured below, and my understanding is that (for some reason I can't fathom) Autodesk refuses to add that very basic capability no matter how many people have been asking for how long. I'd like the openings to actually be see-through, rather than just an image or a hatch pattern. Could anyone give me a full walk-through of how to do that, start to finish? Of if you know of an existing video or write-up that details the whole process, would you mind sharing that? Thanks!

What's the end product? Do you want this for renderings? If yes, Twinmotion comes with Revit now, and they have built-in assets for things like this. So just create it as a normal floor in Revit, and add the material in Twinmotion.

You can apply a material to the floor that provides the pattern and is nearly fully transparent or entirely transparent.

If you know the manufacturer, you can download their component and placed it into your project as real representative of that manufacturer's product.

I'm not familiar with Twinmotion. Will it only display the way I want when it's opened in Twinmotion, or will it also display that way when opened in Revit?

How do I do that? Sorry if that's basic knowledge, but like I'm said I'm very new and I haven't managed to find any info online on how to do this.

It'd only be Twinmotion, which is why I asked what your end goal was.

Create a Fill Pattern (Model) that matches the grid dimensions such as 1"x4".

Edit a Material to use your Fill Pattern for the material's Surface Pattern

Edit the Material Transparency to 90-100%

Do you really need to model the grating?  If not, use a material with cutout.  There are some metal mesh/grating material assets in the OOTB library already.

You can have a surface pattern that mimics it, if you need to quantify it you can multiply by a void ratio etc.

Would have thought there could have been a system family for this kind of thing by now.

Strange I was thinking about this the other day. All the systems are generally a variation on the same theme i.e. bearing bars and ties in the other direction. They can also be custom made with cut edges so a workflow similar to floors would be ideal. I guess you could do a curtain system with pattern based adaptive components but that would be overkill perhaps and you would need an extra two minutes every time you zoom in and out.

This form of construction for escape routes etc. is going to come up more and more.

Maybe I've been spoiled by my time working with mechanical design software, but this seems a lot more complicated than I would've expected. Normally I would just create an extruded cut, pattern that extrusion, and be done.

How do I create a fill pattern that I can apply to the material? I tried following these steps, but but it wants me to select a .pat file. Is that something I have to create myself? If so, what software do I use?
