How to build canopy?

I'm trying to replicate this canopy (1st image below) made in sketchup. My first instinct was to make a mass and apply a curtain system to it. When I do it creates a duplicate cuts through the glass and extends the glass out for no apparent reason (2nd image below). How can I fix this? Also I'm open to other ways of making this but fear its a huge learning curve to get into making this a redundant family

Create a Roof and change it to Sloped Glazing type.  Edit the type divisions, mullions, and paneling per your design, similar to those of a curtain wall type.  For overhang framing, unpin panels and change to Empty System Panel.

Thank you - how can I add voids to it like in the image? Or will I have to make separate roof pieces

You can use Vertical Cut Opening tool to cut holes in a Roof.  You can also delete mullion in the holes and change panels to Empty System Panel type.  Creating them as separate roofs is also a viable option.
