How to Associate an Object to a Door?

So I have been tasked with trying to figure this out.

For say a card reader or other security device - they want to be able to associate it to a door and for it to schedule the door number it is associated with.

Is this possible?

Hopefully somebody who has attempted this sort of thing will answer better than I can, but I do think it is possible and here is my idea:

The card reader or other device would be made as a family, and then nested into a door family with it's "Shared" property turned on.

Perhaps make the device family as a Data Device, and give it an instance parameter like "associated door" or something that could be linked to the door's Mark parameter once you nest it into the door family.

Then you could create a schedule of data devices, filter it to only the card readers (if you had other items of the data device category you didn't want in the schedule) and show that "associated door" parameter.

Okay that's overly simplistic, but maybe it gives you a path to start down?

In thinking about what you have - are you creating a family and nesting it into the actual door?

I am unsure how you are associating the 'associate door' parameter with the existing door mark.

the Arch is loaded into my telcom model. so I do not have direct access to the doors.

I am also working in 2014 if that makes a difference in functionality.

I am not sure how this will work... Can you unsimplify it...

Without nesting the device family into the door family, I don't know how you could link the parameters. I'm afraid you would just have to create an instance parameter in the device family and, when you're placing it into the project, enter the appropriate door number. Much simpler, but requires manual entry of the value into the field for each device placed.

I can't recall the name but I am sure there is an addin that could do this, it extracted parameters from other categories and pushed them into the schedule, had a quick search but can't find it. Ill keep looking. Maybe BIMLINK software could help?

Would creating a yes/no paramter for the door category work? Create a schedule in your model using linked models, then go through and tick each door that need key card... then you can filter by this yes/no. I would be trying to achieve it through data entry rather than linking to another family. Do you need a physical object for your deliverable?

Thanks for the info...

I am currently using just a text parameter and filling in the info through a schedule showing the info I need.

I appreciate the assistance!

I was going to suggest that the manual transfer process could be improved (no need to retype the value, just select the card reader and then the door) through the use of a relatively simple Dynamo graph, but I was only able to get that to work when the door and card reader were in the same file.  Selecting a specific object in a linked file does not appear to be an easy thing to do in Dynamo - or at least beyond my current level of proficiency.

Hello, I know this is an old post but I too have the same issue. I would like to create a scheduled parameter that shows what door number a card reader is on in the linked model. Did you ever find a solution? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I have the same issue, is there a way to associate the actual security device on the Architectural Revit Link door tags?
