How model historical walls with holes to insert windows and doors

Good evening,

I need help for my master thesis . They gave me to model an historic building with classic flared walls. I choose to use a family of adaptive pillars to shape the walls and I modeled the window in a separate family. The walls, modeled as adaptive pillars, work well but they are not punctured by doors or windows or even by the window family created specifically for the building. How can I do? Is there a way to pierce these walls and insert doors and windows? or maybe something I do is wrong and also my method and I have to use the masses? I try not to but I cannot insert my window in the walls.
Please help me, I looked everywhere!

Thanks in advance

You could try to use a Nested Void Family inside your Window and Door Families, then use it to "cut" the adaptive walls.

Thanks for the answer but I tried to follow what you wrote and I cannot get out of it.
Could you explain to me more in detail, step by step how to proceed? maybe It’s my falult that I didn’t explain well what I’ve done. I followed a tutorial on making historical walls, starting from an adaptive family and then classifying it as a pillar and then using it as a wall in the project even if it is a pillar. When I tried to insert something, it cannot be crossed by other objects such as windows or doors. Sorry if it's a simple thing but I’m not an expert so I can’t follow and solve immediately what you recommended. Thank you in any case.

Can you post a small .rvt file with just a "pillar" and a window?

Sure! Maybe I did some mistakes…if you could tell me what I have to do it would be great.

No .rvt attached to your post.

You're right. I'll send it from here.

Your window is a wall based family do it can only be hosted on walls.  You have to create a window family as a face based, or non-hosted family, with a void.  Place it on the pilar then you can cut the hole.

So, those are both families, .rfa files, not a .rvt (Project file).

These get loaded into your .rvt file ( Project)

It looks like the window is cutting the wall?

Not sure what the "pillar" family is for?

Can you send an image / sketch of what your design is supposed to look like?

Yes they are both families and I modeled them in order to insert them in a model of an historical building with flared walls with windows and doors. (see the picture attached).

In a revit forum they told me that to model these kind of walls I have to create a pillar with an adaptive family so when I import the family in the model I select four points and I can model the walls more precisely. The model with these "walls" is ok but It cannot pierced by windows or anything else.

I hope I explain better than before the issue...Let me know how can I solve it or some tips I can apply. Thanks

Good afternoon,

I tried all day to cut my adaptive famuly with an hole, a window, etc.

I starded from an empty template, a generic one, an I also tried to cange the category of my window family in a mechanical item using copy monitor to eliminate the wall as an host but it doesn't work. The pillar stands...I don't understand what I wrong. Could some of you explain to me more precisely what to do? I'd like to avoid to model with masses but I can't seee a way ouy.

-It would be helpful if you could share a picture/image or sketch of the building you are trying to model.

-As Toan said, you need to make the window a face-based family ( not wall hosted), and nest a Generic Model-Void into the window family. Check "cuts with voids when loaded". Then load the family into the project, and the nested void in the window will cut the adaptive component "pillar".

I'll attach a picture of the window and a frame of the plan I'd like to model properly.

I hope it wold be helpful. In any case I'll try again and again to follow your advice. I know for sure it's my fault,  thanks a lot anyway.

The void family nested in my window family couln't cut my adaptive walls, in fact the family is wall hosted and I also tried to model the window family in a face based family. Maybe it's some kind of options or flag, I don't know...in the end I use masses to model my walls. Anyway thanks for your help.
