For this you would have to create a conceptual mass

ConMass.png

Or you could create a adaptive family.

MassFam.png

There you can create a shape and than start pulling faces, edges etc.

You would need to do some studying as this environment is a bit different from the other revit environments

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

Depending on the purpose of the form it may be more appropriate to create a model in place family. This allows you to create basic geometry and assign it to a family category. Really useful for placeholder geometry and the odd thing you don't want make a load able family for. You'll find the button in the expanded arrow of place component.

What do you really want to do. Revit is not a sculptural application like Hexagon for example. It can do many things and adding Dynamo to the process can expand on what it can do considerably. Regardless it requires some direction, some sort of inspiration to figure out which path to take. Simply stating Free Form is too broad a statement to help point you in the right direction. How about sharing some images of what you're interested in doing.

Just to clarify, creating/using the massing environment inside a project IS an In-Place Family assigned to the Mass category. The button for it is called In-Place Mass, it's just a tiny bit faster than using Component > Model In-Place. If we create a mass family and use it in a project then it isn't an in-place family but it also requires editing the family to manipulate its form.

To clarify Stevie and I are talking about two different Revit tools/ features.

If you are using the Inplace Family option :

Inplace family.JPG

This is great for conceptual modelling of buildings and parts of building that may not be easily created using the basic walls floors tools etc. You can then use the model by my face to create quick conceptual models.

However if you want to make some geometry that behaves with a particular family category but you don’t want to make a loadable family then you can use the Model in Place tool. (You can also make a mass family in this way.)

I find this Model in Place family tool useful for placeholder families that may be swapped out later and for additional geometry custom extrusions blends sweeps etc.

I have attached a quick screen cast to show this tool being used. You access all the family editor tools while in the project environment. From your description I think this is the tool you are looking for. Hope this solves your issue.
