How is the development team like

Since this is a rare opportunity to get a peak behind the scenes: 

- is there a dedicated Revit programmer team or are most programmers working on different software packages at a time?

- how big is the development team for Revit?

- what programming language is used for creating Revit?

- is most of the development teams time spent on actual coding or is this just a minor part?

I will give you what insights I can.

• There are a number of "teams" working on different areas of Revit. A team might be 8 or 10 people. The people on a team are not all software engineers, there are designers, quality assurance, learning content, etc... people on all the teams. Each team will be working on a specific area or feature of Revit like visibility and graphic representations or stairs and railings, etc... There are I think 30+ teams working on different things at different times.
• The "development team" proper includes the teams I mentioned above and other people involved in the process in some way, I am not sure of the exact number of people or size of the team as a whole.
•  I am not a software engineer so I don't know what programming language is used for Revit code. I have never asked anyone.
• Depending on a persons role would depend on how much time is spent "coding". As a Learning Content Developer, I am technically part of the development team but spend 0 time coding. I kind of write code to display something like a tooltip in the software, but it is far from what I would call "coding", so it kind of depends.

Hope that gives you a little insight to how this are done in the world of Revit development.

Good morning,

Is there a way for end users such as myself to be involved with the "Development Team" in some capacity?  I have no ambition of leaving my job to work for Autodesk, but are there people who are end users who can discuss with the developers the bugs and needs we as end users see?  Like a "power-user program" with a limited number of people who have practical experience with the software.

There seems to be a lot of room for improvement with the toolset of Revit that people have been asking for for years without Autodesk actually listening.

You can always sign up to be part of the Beta program for Revit. beta.autodesk.com  There you can participate in forums like this directly with teams working on features. You may also volunteer to be part of "sprint reviews" with teams where you can sit in on regular meetings with teams and provide feedback from a customer point of view.

You may be interested in the extended team model. This brings together the customer’s in-house developers, and remote specialists from an IT outsourcing company. The extended team can be managed by the client’s employees (project manager, CTO) or by the client personally.
