How do material settings affect its appearance vis-à-vis views graphics settings

Can anyone explain how the settings of a material will affect its appearance in the shaded, consistent colors, and realistic graphic display styles? I have not been able to find an Autodesk KV that explains this. For example if I look at the graphics tab of any material the first parameter is shading. If I uncheck use render appearance, and select a color, then set the graphic display style of the view to shaded, it does not show that color. If I check the user render appearance box, it shows a color that I would term at best a distant cousin of the colors seen in the image perimeter on the appearance tab. If I change the graphic display style to consistent colors, all materials change colors to something that I cannot figure out where those colors are determined. I have the same question for the realistic graphic display style.

Its a pretty straight forward story. Here is a quick explanation with images.

 

1. Hidden line:

Only material surface pattern is affecting this visual style.

2. Shaded:

The appearance is created with Surface pattern as foreground in conjunction with shading as background. In addition, lighting interacts with the material.

3. Consistent colors:

The appearance is created with Surface pattern as foreground in conjunction with shading as background. However, lighting does not interact with the material. Therefore, we might say that a brother of "Hidden line" visual style is "Consistent colors", while "Shaded" is its distant cousin.

4. Realistic:

The appearance asset is used to show the material and lighting interacts with it.

5. Ray Trace:

Ray Trace uses the appearance asset and it is basically rendering.

I have the same question. The "solution" makes a ton of sense, and is how I would expect the program to perform. Unfortunately, the program doesn't behave like this at all. Changing shaded material settings only effects the inside of my walls where they have been cut (???) 

 

And this only works in axonometric view. In a perspective, there seems to be no way to control graphics via material settings within the shaded view.

 

The problem persists whether I have checked "use render appearance" or not.  

 

Any ideas? Is there some universal override? Seems like a bug to me.

The following screenshots are taken within a family where no graphics settings have been changed at all. 

 

In the materials browser dialog only the "surface pattern" settings affect the appearance, whether in hidden line, shaded or consistent colors. Each view is shown in a screenshot. You can see how the shaded view adds a shadow to the rib ... that is the only difference I noticed among the three.

 

What's going on here? Any ideas?

This stuff drives me crazy. Thank you!
