How do I measure the area of an elevation?

I have a building which I want to measure the area of the elevations for overall area, and extent of windows/doors.

How do I do this in Revit?

You can create a wall schedule and filter by the exterior wall types used for the elevations. You may need to apply some filter to include only the required walls in the schedule. Similar for fenestration area by door and window schedules.

Thanks for the response. Have to say a bit surprised having to create a schedule to find out an area. This is a very simple operation  (or should be) to measure an area. Should be able to measure by points around the elevation. Perhaps I need to an an 'idea'?

another way would be to create filled region and that would give you the area.

Excellent idea. Will give that a go. 

Could still do with a simple measure tool for areas in elevations though.

@ToanDN What if I do not have a specific type for external wall? I could not follow your solution.

Are you using the same wall type for exterior and interior walls, perhaps in the early stages of design when wall types are unknown? In that case, I would duplicate that wall type, name the duplicate Exterior, change all the exterior walls to that type, and calculate the total area by Type. Note that the area of each wall is reduced by the area of doors, windows, and other openings.

Thank you @bill_gilliss for your attention and quick response. I appreciate your suggestion and effort you have made to make it clear through images illustration. Yes the design is in very early stage that no specific walls dedicated for exterior. However, I am like @stuart_willows still looking for a simple way to calculate the elevation area as it might take time to assign types for external walls and calculate areas of facade’s doors, windows, and curtain walls to get the area I seek.

Hi, I know this discussion is a bit old but the question still relevant.

I am looking for a solution for extracting an elevation area and having it show in a schedule.

The Filled region option seems to do a trick, but it will not allow me to set that up in a schedule, so still a manual process of adding it into a glass area calculation (glass area vs. gross side elevation area). I can't use walls since not all walls are relevant and they are not "aware" of what elevation of the building they are in.

Curious to see if there are any new developments on this.

Not the quickest of solutions- but how about just putting a unique identifier into the "Mark" instance parameter for each wall on a particular elevation and then filter your schedule on that- making the Mark a Hidden Field so it does not show on the Schedule when put on a sheet?

The wall area (and them being partially in design options etc) is not giving me the accurate info.

I was hoping for an Area Plan kind of approach or a way to tag/schedule detail items for area. The area shows in properties but I am not able to pull that info in a schedule for some reason.

Right now I am using regions (both masking and filled) and then read the value and transfer it manually to a piece of text :-). Not really Revit worthy I would say.

Likewise -really struggling to get the 2d areas I want out of Revit - not the whole external wall area but the thermal surface area - its really awkward to draw anything to attain this and it all has to be manually calculated - similarly even in plan - if you don't want the area defined by the external/ internal or core but want the thermal envelope or to the airtight layer it doesn't seem to want to play ad I cant seem to move the purple lines it creates without it getting upset.

Any suggestions welcome
