How do I assign different finishes to different floors?

Complete beginner here. I am basically trying to select a separate floor that I made (on the same level) and make its finish separate from that of the wood flooring that isn't selected. But upon applying the change to selected region, it wants to apply it to the other floor that I made separately. I don't see any option to keep the selected floor from sharing the properties the non selected floor has. I'll provide screenshots to show problem.

HI @Anonymous,

You are doing it right when it comes to applying material.

But before applying material Please duplicate the floor and

name it accordingly in the type properties dialogue box.

Right now you are doing it without changing the type

and that is why the other floor is changing along with the selected floor.

This worked! But now I am having a similar issue with walls, but they aren't working the same way. They are each duplicated to a different type, but they are all sharing the same color/texture changes

edit: Nevermind. I realized this was because I was using the same texture and editing it back and forward. I'll try to make a new custom texture for certain walls I need.
