Help - how to schedule lenght in a nested family for any of the element included

Dear all,

first of all thanks in advance for any support that will come.

I have a very simple nested family in attachment which include 2 families (1 Doos and 1 Insulation).

Both families have a shared parameter for the Lenght (Type) and both families have the tick on "Shared".

 in short:

  • family doos is saved with 1200mm
  • family Insulation is saved with 5313mm

THEN I DO

  • the nested family (generic line based), I lock on the ref planes and I load in the project.
  • Once loaded in the project I create the schedule

WHAT HAPPEND:

even though I designed 32m long element de schedule gives me back

  • Doos length 1200mm
  • Insulation Length 5313mm

while both should be reporting 32m like I designed.

anyone can tell me what I do wrong or I missed?

I am getting mad since I tried different combinations and the result is the same.

thank you very much in advance for your help!

regards

  1. You either need to only check the Nested family as shared or neither of them (All what the shared options does is that it allows you to schedule and tag the nested child separately component from the parent)...I think you are confusing shared parameters with shared families
  2. the nested family is currently a line based which you are controlling with a formula...similar to you you previous post
    • If you intend to use formulas to control the length, model this one in a basic generic model (not a line based)
    • If you want to keep it in a line based, remove the following parameters. When you use a line based, the length is controlled by the line Start and End Point...and subsequently the reference planes you lock those points to in the parent family.

Hi RDoau,

I am pleased you stepped in. Look, I need to get de length in the schedule for every element that are in the nested family (all the families are "generic model" and I do need to keep the line based for all). I just removed all the parameters and formula as indicated but is still not working.

Like last fix you managed, it would be great if you can share a GIF/video like last time, it was fantastic and I was able to manage the issue in few minutes. I attach now my first try.

thank you very much in advance

See attached 2020_Family using same profiles you have

  1. Model both the RC 47 and INS 140 using a basic Generic Model template
    • Add a shared Parameter Length (Instance)
    • Add a Shared Parameter Material (Instance)
    • Line based_Fix.gif
  2. Nest Both the above into a line Based template (Nothing in this is shared - not the family and not the parameters)
    • Associate Material from both nested to Material Parameters in the Parent
    • Lock both of the above to the reference planes at the start and the end of the ref. Line
    • Line based_Fix 2.gif
  3. Load the Line based into the project
    • Length is controlled by start/end clicks
    • When you schedule use a filter to exclude the parent from the schedule (use Type Name not equal to OR  use comment in case Type Name filter is not available in older versions)
    • Line based_Fix 3.gif

That's great, it is everything clear. Nice to see the line based made in the generic model:)  thank you very much!
