Having a Door cut a Wall & Floor

I am creating a sliding door family so the base frame would sit into the floor slab to be flush on top. How can I get the door family to cut two elements (Wall & Floor). I know I could create a void in the project, but it would be ideal to have the door family do it automatically. See image.

Place the void in the family and check the "Cuts with Void when Loaded". Then load into project and use Cut Geometry tool.

Thanks for your reply, but I tried all that, and no joy.

 

When I create a void over the base frame, it just covers the frame. When I load into project, the bottom frame is not shown and I can not cut anything even though cut with voids is checked.

Have you tried selecting it in Wireframe? Might be easier.

When I select the floor to be cut, I can not select the door family. I tried wireframe too.

Family Attached. The void is not going the whole way along the base frame just to show that the base frame exists.

I get it. Well, scratch that approach. What about a separate "sleeper" family into cut the floor?

Create the void in a separate family. Insert it into the door family.

I created a nested void, lined it up and carried through parameters. Well, I got to pick the door this time, but then error says 'Can't cut instance of Alum Frame  - 900mm DR w 900mm SS out of Wall'.

I thought you wanted to cut the floor? A void in a Wall-Based family won't cut floor. You need to do it as a separate family. We do sleepers with 2x4s that have a void in them.

Yes, I want the base frame to cut into the floor when loaded into the project. I know a void from a wall based family will not do this, and I know I could just create a void in the project, but I want it to cut automatically. I have created a separate void family (generic model), loaded it into my door family, placed it at the base frame, selected 'cut with voids when loaded' but to no avail. This brings me to where I am not as my previous post pointed out. When I went to cut geometry, it said this error,  'Can't cut instance of Alum Frame  - 900mm DR w 900mm SS out of Wall'.

 

Could you please explain what you mean by sleepers? The problem with Revit is that when people find a fix, they just explain it as if everyone is inside their head and knows exactly what they mean. People need to explain in more than one sentence.

Yep- because the parent family template (door) is telling Revit that this family cuts walls. And so when you then try to make it cut a different category, it can't then comply with it's primary purpose.

 

I think you're stuck with a seperate void family- with parameter to control length- that you just drop in to your door openings and use the "Cut Geometry" tool. 'Would be fantastic to do this from within the Door Family- would love to see a solution to that.

Sleeper: A wood member embedded into the concrete floor that serves to support and to fasten the door threshold.

Right, I get that, but how does that help cut the floor slab when loaded into the project. If I create a separate void (like I did), or if I create a sleeper with a void in it, are they not the same thing. The nested family still will not cut the floor for me.

 

Could you share an example of how you achieved what I am asking by the use of these sleeper families?

Yes I created a void family. I placed that into the door family and placed it over the door base frame. I have all things checked and I load into project. When I cut geometry, I get this error (see image)

1. Open the Structural Framing Family for Dimension Lumber

2. Save it as "Sleeper"

3. Create a void around the existing Solid Geometry. Constrain and lock it just like the Solid Geometry. 

4. Check "Cuts with Void when Loaded"

5. Load Type "2x4" into Project and place it. 

6. Use Cut Geometry tool to cut the Floor with it.  

 

 

When your done it should look like this:
