Group copy problem

Hello,

I have a problem with groups.

I need to create modules in Revit. I first worked with walls + windows + doors to create modules for rooms. But I couldn't copy them from one level to the other, or if it worked, Revit would ask me to separate groups because they had become different.

Then I decided to change all objects in the group into Generic Models. It seemed to work fine but for some reason, when I create a new instance or copy a module, some objects in the group move in a weird way.

Does anybody know why it works like this ? Does anybody have a method to create modular architecture within Revit ?

Walls in Group? Set their TOP CONSTRAINT to UNCONNECTED.

Don't use attached relationships in groups. The top constraints of walls are commonly attached to levels or other hosts like floors and roofs, but these relationships should be avoided in groups. If you manipulate the datum or attached host and the relationship creates inconsistent conditions among the instances of the group, you'll see a warning asking you to fix the groups. Fixing the group really doesn't fix the group. It actually explodes it or creates a new group that is no longer referenced to the first group.

OK, this could work maybe, but now I've gone further with the Generic models version. So do you know why the copy doesn't work well ? (see my attached picture in the previous question)

Does the group only contain walls, windows, and doors? just unconstrain all if there are any constraints with floors and level.

The group should contain walls, windows, floors, ceilings, doors, furniture, pipes, electricity... all the objects that you could find in a room.

Changing elements to General Models doesn't affect Grouping Behavior.

...I'm not sure I understand you. What do you mean by "I've gone further with the Generic models version"?

Hi

I wouldn't use groups for modules, I would make a separate project, make the module by itself, then link it into your main project, copy and paste as needed. Rinse and repeat for different modules.

I mean I put more details in the generic model version than in the version with walls.

This solution looks good, but it doesn't fit for 2 reasons :

- I want to be able to put modules side-to-side and one above the other to adjust the size of the elements (the bottom of the beam sjoud touch the top of the column that stands in the bottom module, and same for side-to-side elements)

- I want to create displaced views where elements are displaced within a module. If I link a project, I'm able to displace the project but not the elements  separately within the module.

I see

1. Lining up structure should be easy though since links allow for multiple changes at once. You just have to go back to the linked project, adjust the beam, save, then reload the link in the main project (Manage Tab>Manage Links)

2. You can bind an individual instance of a link and that will allow you to displace elements within the module.

I've tried using groups and have found linking projects to be a much smoother process in my opinion.

Thanks for the proposal, but this workflow doesn't seem to be neither safe or easy. I'll think about using it if I can't find any other solution.

The idea of binding an instance of the link is smart. I'll keep it for later 🙂
